Indianapolis Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon fired general manager Chris Ballard on Monday morning, hours after the team blew a 13-0 halftime lead and lost 26-20 to the previously winless Tennessee Titans. The defeat dropped the Colts to 2-4 and gave Tennessee its first win of the 2026 season.

Ballard was in his 10th season running the Colts’ front office. His firing marks the end of a tenure that began in 2016 and never delivered the sustained contention Indianapolis set out to build after Andrew Luck’s early retirement.

The Main Development

Irsay-Gordon made the move the day after the loss to the Titans, choosing to act in the middle of the season rather than wait until its conclusion. In a statement, she said the timing was intentional.

“Making this change during the season was a deliberate decision,” Irsay-Gordon said. “Waiting would only delay the important work that needs to begin now.”

She also pointed to the standard she expects the franchise to meet going forward. “As I said at the start of the season, the sense of urgency has never been higher,” Irsay-Gordon said. “Our standard is to compete for championships, and I believe a change in leadership is necessary to meet that standard.”

Irsay-Gordon credited Ballard for his service to the organization even as she moved on from him. “I am grateful to Chris for his years of service to the Colts and for everything he poured into this organization,” she said. “He cared deeply about our team and our community, and we wish Chris and his family all the best.”

Ballard’s Tenure And Record

Ballard finishes his run as Colts GM with a 72-82-1 record and two playoff appearances over nine-plus seasons. The franchise has reached the postseason just twice under his watch and won only one playoff game, which came in 2018 during his second year on the job.

The Colts have missed the playoffs in five straight seasons and are on pace to make it six in a row in 2026, according to Sporting News. Ballard took over the front office the year after Luck helped lead the franchise to consistent contention, and the quarterback’s retirement before the 2019 season left Indianapolis searching for stability at the position ever since.

Several of Ballard’s recent roster moves drew scrutiny as the losses mounted, per CBS Sports. He signed quarterback Daniel Jones to a two-year, $88 million contract this offseason without soliciting competing offers, a deal that carries a $35 million dead cap hit if Jones is released after this season. Ballard also traded two first-round picks to the New York Jets for cornerback Sauce Gardner, a move that has since been viewed as a mistake, and selected Anthony Richardson with a high draft pick, though Richardson has not developed as the team hoped.

What It Means For The Colts’ Roster

The front office Ballard leaves behind faces immediate structural challenges. Indianapolis has no first-round pick in the 2027 draft because of the Gardner trade, which limits the trade capital available to address needs through added draft capital. The Colts also traded wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., leaving the roster thin at the position heading into this season, according to Sporting News.

Irsay-Gordon made clear that the front office change does not lower expectations for the remainder of 2026. “I also want to be clear: this decision does not change our goals for the season,” she said. “We have a lot of football in front of us, and I expect us to compete, improve, and win football games.”

What’s Next

The Colts have not named an interim or permanent replacement for Ballard, and no timeline for a general manager search has been announced. Indianapolis sits at 2-4 as it looks to turn around a season that has already produced significant front-office upheaval, with the roster questions Ballard leaves behind now falling to whoever takes over the position.
