“If you’ve waited this long to pay your franchise quarterback, it’s only going to get worse,” Mayfield said. “I’m going to have a big year.”
Those comments make one thing clear: Mayfield believes he’s earned a new contract, and he’s not happy that one hasn’t arrived.

He added that the lack of a long-term commitment was “probably the most disappointing” part of a negotiation process in which Tampa Bay’s offer was reportedly “pretty far” from what he was seeking.
For a player who revived his career in Tampa Bay, those comments are notable.

Mayfield Has a Strong Case
It’s hard to argue with much of Baker Mayfield’s résumé since arriving in Tampa.
After leaving Cleveland and bouncing between the Panthers and Rams, many wondered whether he’d ever become a franchise quarterback again. Instead, he’s arguably played the best football of his career with the Buccaneers.
Over the past three seasons, Mayfield has:

Most importantly, he helped the Buccaneers transition from the Tom Brady era without experiencing the steep decline many expected. That’s a major reason Mayfield clearly feels he deserves to be paid accordingly.
The Contract Situation Isn’t Going Away
One factor likely contributing to Mayfield’s frustration is where he currently ranks among NFL quarterbacks financially.
Despite his recent success, he reportedly sits just 16th among active quarterbacks in average annual salary.
For a player who views himself as a franchise quarterback and has delivered playoff appearances and division titles, that ranking probably feels far too low.
The Buccaneers and Mayfield apparently couldn’t find common ground before camp, and now the quarterback seems prepared to let his play do the talking.
Motivation Shouldn’t Be a Problem
If Tampa Bay was looking for a way to motivate its quarterback, it may have found one. Mayfield repeatedly emphasized that he expects to have a huge season and appears eager to prove his value on the field. He also made it clear that discussions are effectively over for now.
“After today, I’m not answering any more because I’m not negotiating any more,” Mayfield said.
That means the focus shifts entirely to football.
Betting on Himself
The interesting part is that Mayfield doesn’t seem afraid of what comes next.
Reports earlier this week suggested he’s comfortable playing out the season and potentially reaching free agency. He’s also reportedly not concerned about the possibility of a franchise tag after the year.
That confidence suggests Mayfield believes a strong 2026 season will only increase his leverage. And based on his comments, he may be right.
Every touchdown pass, every win, and every playoff push will now be viewed through the lens of a quarterback trying to prove he should have been paid months ago.
For the Buccaneers, that could ultimately be a good problem to have. For Mayfield, it’s personal. The veteran quarterback feels Tampa Bay didn’t show him the respect he believes he’s earned, and now he’s heading into one of the biggest seasons of his career with plenty of motivation to prove it.
