Abdul-Malik Olajuwon gives SMU a big 1st 2027 recruiting win

SMU’s 2027 recruiting class has its first name, and it is a famous one. Abdul-Malik Olajuwon, the son of Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon, committed to the Mustangs on Thursday, Oct. 1, announcing the decision to ESPN’s Paul Biancardi, Bleacher Report reported.

The four-star guard is coach Andy Enfield’s first commitment in the 2027 cycle, according to CBS Sports.

One visit was enough

Abdul-Malik Olajuwon visited SMU on Sept. 25 and canceled planned trips to Kansas State and Virginia Tech soon after. He had also visited Minnesota. His offer list included Auburn, Kansas State, Minnesota, TCU, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and West Virginia, per Bleacher Report.

He said the staff’s vision for him closed the deal.

“Their belief in me, and their plan for me with their system, fits me very well,” he said. “They play to win, and that’s my style. Coach Andy Enfield sees me making an impact as a freshman, playing point guard and helping on the defensive end.”

Family played a part, too. “My dad was with me on the visit and feels that this is a great decision for me,” Olajuwon said. “I also leaned on my older brother, who’s been through the process and told me not to think only about basketball, but to think long-term.” That brother, Aziz Olajuwon, is a freshman at Stanford this season.

The Sugar Land detail comes from a Sports Illustrated report on his move to IMG.

What the Abdul-Malik Olajuwon pledge means for SMU

The timing works for Enfield. SMU went 20-14 last season and made its first NCAA Tournament since 2017, though its stay was short: the Mustangs lost to Miami (Ohio) in the First Four.

Landing a recognizable name early gives SMU a starting point for the class. Enfield also gets a guard who sees himself as a point guard, not just a scorer, which fits the role Olajuwon described.

A class full of famous last names

Abdul-Malik Olajuwon is not the only 2027 prospect with a pro bloodline. Beckham Black, the top-ranked player in the class, is the younger brother of Orlando Magic guard Anthony Black. NaVorro Bowman Jr., ranked No. 11 and the son of former NFL All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman, committed to UConn last month. Kager Knueppel, brother of Charlotte Hornets guard Kon Knueppel, is headed to Duke, CBS Sports noted.
