World Cup 2026 Group G Preview

Group G of the 2026 World Cup should be very interesting. Belgium is very good and very motivated. They should run away with this group. The interesting thing is the battle between Iran and Egypt for second place in this group. New Zealand ought to bring up the rear in this group.
Belgium is one of the best teams in the World, ranked number 8 by FIFA. They should be motivated by their poor performance in Qatar in 2022. It could be argued that they wilted in the heat. They only managed one goal against the Canadians, and that was it, and they also failed to make it out of their group. The team needed to get younger, and get younger they have. One could even say they are green.
The Belgians are led by Jeremy Doku, a forward, who is a game-breaker from Manchester City. He played well against the United States in a friendly in March. A potential breakout star for the Begians in the World Cup is Malik Fofana. The 21-year-old midfielder is dangerous and unpredictable. He plays for Lyon in France. He had an ankle injury last October, but he seems to have recovered.
Egypt is one of the contenders for second place in Group G. Egypt has won the Aficra Cup seven times, but still has not won in the World Cup. That should change rhis year. There are two key performers on this team. Mohamed Salad is a legend at Liverpool. Omar Marmoush is a tip performer at Manchester City. The Phraohs, as they are called, were unbeated in ten qualifying matches.
Forward Mohamed Salah is now 33, and has been the leading scorer for the Pharoahs for much of his 15-year career for the National Team. He scored 9 of Egypt’s 20 goals in Qualfying. So even though he has slowed down, he is still dangerous. A potential breakout player for Egypt is Ibrahim Adel. He is 25 years old and is one of the few new faces on the roster. He is a versital performer. They are ranked number 29.
Iran is looking to win in the knockout round after making four consecutive Wold Cups. The reaction to the 21st ranked team should be interesting. They asked, unsuccessfully, to have their matches moved outside of the United States. Their battle with Egypt should be a close one.
They are led by the 33-year-old forward Mehdi Taremi. He plays in Greece and had ten goals in the qualifying round. He remains dangerous. AmirMohammad Razzaghinia is a potetial breakout star for the Iranians. The 20-year-old midfielder is defensive minded. He only got his second cap for the national team in March. He should get a lot of playing time in this World Cup.
New Zealand is the fourth team in this group. The Kiwis should struggle. They benefitted from the expansion of the World Cup field to 48 teams. This move guarantted Oceana its own automatic qualifying berth. New Zealand scored 29 goals in the qualification round and conceeded only one. However, none of the teams they faced were ranked in the top 150.
The leading player for New Zealand is forward Chris Wood. He is a 34-year-old who scored 9 goals in the qualfying rounds. He is also the all-time leading scorer for the Kiwis. A potential breakout star is Finn Surnam, a tall 22-year-old defender. He is in his third deason in the United States and lokks to be a shut down force for the team.
Group G Forcasts
