Tyreek Hill Urges Police Officer’s Dismissal Following Pre-Game Arrest Controversy

Before the Miami Dolphins game against the Jaguars, fans saw superstar Tyreek Hill violently handcuffed curbside. The tense situation seemingly resolved as Tyreek Hill scored an 80-yard touchdown hours later, celebrating with a playful handcuff gesture, and the Dolphins secured a home victory.
Tyreek Hill and other players addressed the situation to the media following the game, blaming the responding officers. Following the swift release of bodycam footage, the general public was shocked at the “public servants” conduct during the routine traffic stop.

Miami-Dade police released multiple bodycam angles of Tyreek Hill’s September 8 detainment after public demand. The footage showed Tyreek Hill’s black McLaren 720S with a decently high rate of speed before his stoppage. The violation ticket revealed Hill was going approximately 60 MPH in a 40 MPH zone. ‘Cheetah’ pulled over quickly and handed over his I.D. and necessary paperwork with no resistance. He admitted his wrongdoings and requested the ticket quickly, not wanting to be late to nearby Hard Rock Stadium.

After Hill attempted to roll up his window, quickly, the potentially brief apprehension escalated to physicality. Danny Torres, the administrative officer in charge of the traffic stop, demanded that Hill roll down his window. When Tyreek partially rolled his window the officers demanded he step out of the vehicle. As he attempted to step out of the vehicle, officers grabbed Hill and aggressively placed him to the ground, securing him with a knee to his spine. Hill can be heard telling agent Drew Rosenhaus that he was getting arrested via phone call.

Hill told reporters that he attempted to keep his window up to avoid onlookers arriving to see him play. “If I let my window down, people walking by, driving by, they’re going to notice that it’s me,” Hill told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on Monday night. “And they’re going to start taking pictures, and I didn’t want to create a scene at all. Like, I just really wanted to get the ticket and then go on about my way.”

“Now, does that give them the right to literally beat the dog out of me? Absolutely not. But at the end of the day, I wish I could go back and do things a bit differently.”

The Dolphins stated after the body-cam video was released that they were “saddened by the overly aggressive and violent conduct directed towards Tyreek Hill, Calais Campbell, and Jonnu Smith” and added that “there are some officers who mistake their responsibility and commitment to serve with misguided power.” Campbell and Smith arrived on the scene to question and diffuse the situation after they noticed their teammate in peril. Ultimately Campbell was also placed in handcuffs.

Tyreek Hill Demands Cops Firing To Media

Following the release of body cam footage, Hill doubled down on his disdain for responding officers.

“Gone. Gone. Gone. Gone. Gone. He gotta go, man,” he said. “Because, in that instance right there, not only did he treat me bad, he also treated my teammates with disrespect. He had some crazy words toward them and they ain’t even do nothing. Like, what did they do to you? They were just walking on the sidewalk. He gotta go, man. “Not too many times ‘Cheetah’ say people gotta go, but you … out. Gone!”

Torres was placed on “administrative duties” by the police department, but it is still uncertain if he will return. Torres’ lawyers released a statement on Monday calling for his reinstatement.

Final Thoughts

The American police force is built upon a racist structure. Police disproportionately patrol black and brown neighborhoods, unfairly search black and brown people during traffic stops, and unjustifiably murder minorities more than white Americans.

Tyreek Hill posed the question, ” What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill” and to me, it feels like an unfortunately easy answer. The police officers involved in the situation should have a full-scale investigation of their previous arrests, and likely should never wield a badge and gun ever again.
