The Ottawa Senators signed head coach Travis Green to a multi-year contract extension through the 2030-31 season, president of hockey operations and general manager Steve Staios announced Monday. The move locks in Green, who took over as the franchise’s 14th head coach in May 2024, for at least five more seasons behind the Ottawa bench.
Staios also announced multi-year extensions for assistant coaches Nolan Baumgartner, Ben Sexton and Mike Yeo, along with goaltending coach Justin Peters. The club did not disclose financial terms for any of the deals.
Terms Of The Travis Green Contract Extension
The extension keeps Green in charge of the Senators through 2030-31, according to NHL.com. The length of the deal was confirmed by Staios, though the team did not release salary or other contractual details. Green’s full coaching staff received new deals alongside him, a sign the organization wants continuity across its bench staff and not just at the top.
Why Ottawa Made The Commitment
Staios said the decision to extend Green reflects what he has seen from the coach since hiring him two years ago. “When I was in the search to identify our head coach two years ago, it was clear to me that Travis had the qualities to move our team forward,” Staios said. “I have watched him implement systems and structures that have reinforced my belief in his coaching abilities. We share the same vision and philosophy and are confident we can continue to build on our team.”
That alignment between the front office and the coaching staff is the clearest explanation Ottawa has given for the length of the deal. Staios framed the extension as a continuation of a plan set in motion when Green was hired, rather than a reaction to a single moment or result.
Green’s Record In Ottawa
Green has guided the Senators to the playoffs in each of his first two seasons as head coach. He picked up his 95th career win behind the Ottawa bench last Thursday, a victory that moved him into a tie for fifth place on the NHL’s all-time coaching wins list. Those numbers give Staios’s comments about Green’s coaching ability a statistical backbone, with the win total and the back-to-back postseason appearances both accumulated since Green’s May 2024 hiring.
What’s Next
With the extension finalized, Green and his full staff remain in place through the 2030-31 season. The Senators’ next game is this week as the team looks to build on the progress that led to the extension.s on-ice focus turns back to its current schedule, including its recent matchups against division rivals like the Flyers and Maple Leafs, as the team looks to build on the progress that led to the extension.
