The Detroit Tigers are already facing a difficult stretch of the season, but ace pitcher Tarik Skubal may have just increased the urgency with his latest comments.

With the Tigers sitting well below expectations and approaching the trade deadline, Skubal openly acknowledged the reality facing the organization if things do not improve quickly. His comments served as a reminder that every game over the next several weeks could impact not only the team’s playoff hopes but also the future of the roster.

Speaking with Chris McCosky of the Detroit News, Skubal didn’t sugarcoat the situation.

“The reality is we need to play better baseball or else,” Skubal said. “Come the deadline, you give the front office an option to reassess where this team is.”

The left-hander went even further, noting that if Detroit’s front office no longer views the roster as a playoff-caliber group, significant changes could follow.

Those comments highlight the pressure surrounding a Tigers team that entered Friday with a disappointing 30-44 record. Detroit currently sits nine games behind first place in the AL Central and 6.5 games out of a Wild Card position. For a club that hoped to compete in 2026, those standings are far from where they expected to be.

Tigers Continue to Struggle Offensively

While Skubal has done his part when healthy, Detroit’s offense has been one of the biggest reasons for the team’s disappointing start.

The Tigers have scored just 301 runs through 74 games, ranking among the lowest-scoring offenses in Major League Baseball. Even when Detroit receives strong pitching performances, the lack of run support has consistently been an issue.

The organization recently welcomed Skubal back from the injured list after he missed time following elbow surgery. Although he pitched just 4.2 innings in his return against the Cleveland Guardians, having the former Cy Young winner back on the mound was a significant boost. Still, one player alone cannot fix the problems facing the club.

Trade Deadline Could Define Detroit’s Future

The biggest storyline surrounding Detroit over the next six weeks may be Skubal himself.

If the Tigers remain out of contention, rival teams will undoubtedly inquire about the star pitcher. As a two-time American League Cy Young Award winner who is scheduled to hit free agency after the season, Skubal would instantly become one of the most sought-after players on the market.

For now, Skubal says his focus remains on winning games rather than trade rumors. However, his comments make it clear that everyone inside the Tigers clubhouse understands what is at stake.

The message from Detroit’s ace is simple: start winning now, or the organization could look very different after the trade deadline.
