Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans announced Monday that wide receiver Tank Dell will play Sunday against the New York Giants, marking his first game action in 22 months. Dell last took the field in December 2024, before a knee injury wiped out the rest of that season and all of 2025.
Dell suffered a torn ACL, MCL, PCL and other ligaments in his left knee during a game in December 2024, according to the Houston Chronicle. Dell, 26, missed the entire 2025 season and opened the 2026 campaign on injured reserve as he worked his way back.
The Main Development: Texans Clear Dell To Play
Dell began practicing with the Texans two weeks before Monday’s announcement, which opened a 21-day window for Houston to activate him to the roster, per the Houston Chronicle. That window will close with his return against the Giants in Week 7.
Dell’s path back was not a straight line. He returned to practice during training camp but suffered a setback that pushed his timeline further into the season, according to the Houston Chronicle.
What It Means: A Crowded Receiver Room
Dell rejoins a Texans wide receiver group that has changed significantly since his injury. Houston traded for Marvin Harrison Jr. at mid-season, adding him to a room that already includes Nico Collins, Jaylin Noel, Xavier Hutchinson and Kayshon Boutte, according to Sporting News.
That depth means Dell is unlikely to step immediately into a featured role. Sporting News described him as a player who “might not be a top option in the passing attack” but who “could provide an extra spark for the offense, even as a depth option.”
Context: Dell’s Production Before The Injury
Dell built a strong early track record before the injury interrupted his career. Over his first two NFL seasons, he caught 98 passes for 1,376 yards and 10 touchdowns, numbers that made him a notable part of Houston’s passing game before the knee injury sidelined him.
Houston enters Week 7 having won back-to-back games against the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars after an 0-4 start to the season.
What’s Next: Sunday Against The Giants
Dell is set to make his season debut Sunday when the Texans host the Giants in Week 7. The game will mark his first regular-season snaps since December 2024 and the first test of how the Texans plan to use him within a receiver room that now includes Harrison and Collins as primary targets.
