Indiana Fever general manager Amber Cox weighed in on Stephanie White’s coaching future during the team’s season-ending media availability Saturday, offering supportive remarks a day after White herself addressed the topic. White told reporters during exit interviews that she hopes to remain in charge of the Fever, and Cox responded by signaling confidence in the coach without announcing a formal decision on her status.

The comments came after Indiana closed the season 28-16, a franchise record, before falling to the Las Vegas Aces in three games in the first round of the playoffs.

What White And Cox Said About The Fever Coaching Future

White did not hedge when asked about returning to the sideline. “I hope to continue to be the coach,” she said during Saturday’s exit interviews, according to Sporting News.

Cox echoed that sentiment when discussing the offseason work ahead for the organization. “And that includes Steph and the coaching staff,” Cox said, addressing the preparation needed heading into next season. Cox’s remarks conveyed confidence in White and emphasized continuity with the current coaching staff, though the general manager stopped short of confirming White’s return in any official capacity.

What It Means

Nothing in Cox’s statement amounts to a formal announcement that White will be back on the bench for the Fever next season. Her comments reflect support for White and the staff as Indiana begins to map out changes ahead of next year, but the organization has not made a binding declaration on the coach’s contract status or tenure.

That distinction matters given how central White has become to the franchise. She was part of Indiana’s coaching staff when the Fever won the 2012 championship as an assistant, and she later led the team to the 2015 WNBA Finals as head coach. That history gives her standing with the organization beyond this season’s results.

Context: A Record Season Ends In The First Round

Indiana’s 28-16 regular season mark was the best in franchise history, but the playoff run ended quickly against Las Vegas. The first-round exit followed a season that also included off-court scrutiny for the Fever fanbase. Cox used her season-ending news conference to defend Indiana’s supporters after A’ja Wilson had a confrontation with a fan during Game 2 of the playoff series, according to Yahoo Sports.

What’s Next

No timeline has been given for when Indiana might make an official decision on White’s contract or coaching staff for next season. Cox’s comments came during the same stretch of exit interviews in which Caitlin Clark discussed her own offseason priorities, according to IndyStar, as the Fever begin turning attention toward roster and staffing decisions ahead of the next WNBA season.
