Gabby Williams was named 2026 WNBA Finals MVP after the Golden State Valkyries defeated the Atlanta Dream in a seven-game series to capture the franchise’s first championship. The expansion Valkyries became the quickest expansion team to win a WNBA title in league history.

Williams scored 30 points in the series-clinching Game 7 victory, a 68-63 win over Atlanta. Twenty-eight of those points came in the second half, a total that set a WNBA Finals record for points in a single half.

The Main Development

Williams made multiple crucial baskets late in Game 7 as Golden State secured control in the final minutes. Her second-half surge turned a close contest into a title-clinching performance, and the Valkyries closed out the Dream to finish the series.

The Finals had gone the distance after Atlanta forced a Game 7 with an 80-69 win in Game 6, setting up the deciding matchup that Williams dominated.

What It Means

The Gabby Williams 2026 Finals MVP award caps a series in which Golden State’s supporting cast carried much of the early load while Williams delivered the signature moment when it mattered most. In Game 7, teammates Kiah Stokes, Veronica Burton and Kaila Charles combined for 31 of the Valkyries’ 38 total rebounds, underscoring how the team shared the workload on the boards even as Williams took over on offense.

That balance had shown up throughout the series. In Game 5, a 64-55 Golden State win on Oct. 27, Stokes posted 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots while Burton added 13 points and eight rebounds. Williams shot just 3 for 14 from the field that night, finishing with 9 points and six rebounds, a quiet outing compared to her Game 7 explosion, according to CBC Sports.

Context: A Fast Rise For An Expansion Franchise

Golden State’s run to a title in its debut postseason, under coach Natalie Nakase, stands out in a league where expansion teams typically need years to contend. Atlanta, coached by Karl Smesko, pushed the series to its limit before falling in Game 7.

The championship followed a path that included a sweep of the Aces to reach the Finals, part of a stretch Total Apex Sports covered in its coverage of Golden State’s semifinal series. The team’s title celebration drew reaction from Bay Area teams and former President Barack Obama on social media, according to ESPN.

Team Impact

Williams’ Game 7 scoring burst came after a series in which the Valkyries leaned on different contributors from game to game, including the Burton-led stretch detailed in Total Apex Sports’ recap of the team’s semifinal series win. The Finals MVP honor recognizes that Williams delivered when Golden State needed a closer most, even after a difficult shooting night just two games earlier.

What’s Next

The Valkyries now turn to the offseason as reigning WNBA champions, with Williams carrying the Finals MVP distinction into 2027. No official date for the league’s offseason calendar or awards events has been announced.
