The St. Louis Cardinals offense has gotten off to a historic start during the 2025 regular season. For the third time in franchise history, they have opened a season with seven straight games of 10+ hits. They previously accomplished this feat to begin the 1901 and 1956 campaigns.
The only other teams in league history to have longer such streaks to open a season are the Pittsburgh Pirates in 8 straight contests and the 1999 Cleveland Indians with 10 consecutive games. Will the St. Louis Cardinals tie Pittsburgh’s record later today?
St. Louis Cardinals Season Summary
The Cardinals have opened a season with seven straight games of 10+ hits for just the third time since 1900
They previously did so to open the 1901 and 1956 seasons
Only longer szn-opening streaks of 10+-hit games in MLB last 125 szns:
1999 CLE: 10
1961 PIT: 8— Sarah Langs (@SlangsOnSports) April 4, 2025
Even though the Cardinals have been led by a historic offense, it has not been all smooth sailing for the ballclub through seven games. They are 4-3 and lost back-to-back extra-inning games to the Los Angeles Angels earlier in the season. The Cardinals offense has been one of the league’s best. They lead the league in batting average, are third in runs scored, and fourth in home runs. Their historic offense has been paced by Right Fielder Lars Nootbaar. He is eighth in the league in batting average and Catcher Ivan Herrera is top 10 in batting average, home runs, RBI, and OPS.
The issue for the St. Louis Cardinals this season has been its pitching staff. A great offensive start has not overcome a subpar pitching performance. They are 22nd in ERA, 19th in opposing batting average, and 28th in strikeouts. If the team can pair a great offense with an improved pitching staff, they will have a strong season.
Final Thoughts
The Cardinals offense looks to continue making history this afternoon in the middle game of a three-game set against the Boston Red Sox. Boston bested St. Louis 13-9 on Friday. Both teams will look to get an improved performance on the mound on Saturday.
