Sammy Smith’s weekend at Talladega Superspeedway ended with two trophies, two close finishes and a result that had eluded him for more than a year in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. The JR Motorsports driver added Saturday’s Progress Group 250 to his first career NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series win on Friday, completing a double few drivers manage in a single weekend.

He won by 0.084 seconds, with teammate Carson Kvapil losing the lead in the closing moments after controlling most of the race.Smith’s fourth O’Reilly Series win was particularly significant because he hadn’t reached Victory Lane in 53 races. The No. 8 Chevrolet didn’t start the afternoon at the front of the field, either.

Starting 11th, Smith needed to work through traffic while keeping his car in position to take advantage of the drafting opportunities that define racing at Talladega. Kvapil appeared to control the race for much of the distance. He led 67 of the 94 laps and collected the opening stage win, establishing himself as the driver Smith would need to overcome.

Rather than force an early challenge, Smith stayed in the fight and waited for the closing lap to create an opening. The decisive move developed along the backstretch when Justin Allgaier gave Smith a push, helping the No. 8 Chevrolet build enough momentum to challenge Kvapil. Smith pulled alongside his teammate and completed the pass before reaching the finish line.

The two JR Motorsports drivers finished less than a tenth of a second apart. Jesse Love, the championship leader, crossed the line third, 0.131 seconds behind Smith. The leading four drivers finished within 0.144 seconds of one another, leaving almost no separation between the contenders as they reached the checkered flag on Talladega’s 2.66-mile oval.

Friday’s Truck Win Set The Stage

Saturday’s performance was only half of Smith’s achievement. One day earlier, he led the No. 7 Spire Motorsports truck to his first career Craftsman Truck Series win at the Love’s RV Stop 225. Smith was making his 11th start in the series when he emerged from an overtime finish ahead of Tyler Ankrum by 0.091 seconds. He led 21 laps, staying within striking distance before the final restart gave him the chance to win.

Austin Green took third, followed by Ty Majeski and Kaden Honeycutt. The Truck Series race featured five cautions and two incidents, forcing drivers to manage traffic and avoid trouble before the final push. Smith came through with the result, then returned Saturday to deliver another finish decided by a fraction of a second.

His Talladega success arrived as he also revealed plans to race full-time for TRICON Garage in the Truck Series in 2027. The move gives Smith clear direction for the next stage of his career, and his No. 7 performance offered an encouraging start to that next chapter. His Saturday victory, meanwhile, showed he can still produce results in the O’Reilly Series.

Martinsville Awaits As Championship Pressure Builds

Although Smith’s win did not put him at the center of the championship fight, it affected the contest between the drivers still chasing the title. Love’s lead over Allgaier shrank by 19 points, while Kvapil added a runner-up finish to his season. Allgaier finished fourth after taking the Stage 2 victory.

Next up is the National Debt Relief 250 at Martinsville Speedway, followed by the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. With the championship still undecided, the remaining races leave little room for contenders to surrender points. Stage results and final finishing positions could make a considerable difference before the season concludes.

What This Means

Smith leaves Talladega with more than a single strong afternoon. His first Truck Series victory marked a new milestone, while the O’Reilly Series win ended a 53-start drought. Delivering both results on consecutive days also demonstrated how effectively he handled two separate race cars and two different competitive situations.

The weekend could also provide momentum as Smith prepares for his planned full-time Truck Series campaign with TRICON Garage in 2027. He now has a first series victory to build on and another O’Reilly Series win to add to his record. For JR Motorsports, his Saturday performance also delivered a team victory, a well-timed move rather than a prolonged run at the front.

What’s Next

Smith’s next challenge is maintaining that form as the O’Reilly Series heads to Martinsville Speedway for the National Debt Relief 250. The championship contenders will focus on gaining points before the Homestead-Miami finale, with Love defending his advantage and Allgaier looking to make up ground lost throughout the season.

Smith will have a different objective: prove that Talladega can be a starting point for more consistent results. He won through two separate opportunities, but both required him to stay in contention until the closing moments. Whether he can carry that execution into the next race remains to be seen. For now, he leaves Talladega with two wins, a breakthrough in the Truck Series and an O’Reilly Series victory that finally ended his long wait.
