San Jose Sharks Outlook
San Jose has won four of its first five games overall, including a 10-0 rout of Anaheim and back-to-back overtime wins over Florida and Los Angeles, before the 5-0 shutout loss at Dallas on Oct. 6 snapped that momentum. The Sharks have scored nine goals on 71 shots for a 12.7 shooting percentage, the better clip of the two teams in this matchup, and their 2-1-0 start still has them inside the top four of the Pacific Division.
The bigger question is Macklin Celebrini’s health. The center, who leads the Sharks in assists and points with five each, was a late scratch against Dallas with a lower body injury and is listed as day-to-day. Head coach Ryan Warsofsky said Celebrini is being evaluated and will continue to be assessed to determine his status, according to CBS Sports. Alexander Wennberg moved up to center the top line in Celebrini’s absence, and Ty Dellandrea made his season debut as a result of the shuffle.
Yaroslav Askarov is projected as the probable starting goalie. San Jose’s goaltending has allowed 12 goals against on 87 shots for an .862 save percentage through three games, a number the Sharks will need to tighten up after conceding five unanswered goals in their last outing. San Jose also carries injury absences beyond Celebrini, with Adam Gaudette, Alex Barre-Boulet, Quentin Musty and Cam Lund all on injured reserve.
St. Louis Blues Outlook
St. Louis has lost three of its last four games, including a 6-1 defeat at Colorado on Oct. 4 and a 4-2 loss at Chicago on Oct. 7, the night before this matchup. The Blues’ lone bright spot in that stretch was a 4-0 shutout win at Dallas on Oct. 3.
Connor McMichael leads St. Louis with three points on two assists, while Mason McTavish paces the team with two goals.
Joel Hofer is projected as the probable starting goalie for St. Louis. The Blues have posted a .900 save percentage on 82 shots against, better than San Jose’s mark, and their average goals against of 3.33 is also lower than the Sharks’ 4.00.
St. Louis is working through a thin blue line, with defensemen Tyler Tucker (left knee surgery) and Logan Mailloux (hand surgery) both on injured reserve, along with forwards Alexey Toropchenko (upper body) and Felix Trudeau (undisclosed), who is listed with a return date of Oct. 10.
Key Matchup
San Jose’s offense, which has scored at a 12.7% clip, against a Blues penalty-kill unit that has allowed one power-play goal through three games will be worth tracking early. The Sharks have already shown firepower with a shorthanded goal and a shorthanded assist of their own this season, and if Celebrini can’t go, the scoring burden shifts further to Will Smith, who scored twice in San Jose’s overtime win over Florida, and to Wennberg running the top line.
On the other side, goaltending efficiency could decide a low-event night. St. Louis has stopped shots at a .900 clip compared to San Jose’s .862, and the Blues’ 3.33 goals-against average is tighter than the Sharks’ 4.00.
If Hofer holds up against a Sharks lineup that is averaging 23.7 shots per game through three contests, St. Louis has a path to controlling the pace after consecutive losses.
What To Watch
Celebrini’s official game-time status is the headline question for San Jose, which sits fourth in the Pacific at 4 points and can ill afford another shutout loss after the Dallas game. St. Louis, tied for last in the Central Division with 2 points, is looking to snap a pattern of alternating wins and losses that has defined its first three games. Both teams’ injured reserve lists remain lengthy enough that lineup depth will be tested throughout the night.
San Jose continues its early-season stretch looking to build on wins like the overtime victory detailed in the Sharks vs Kings overtime win, while St. Louis aims to find its footing after a difficult opening week.
