The Philadelphia Phillies signed Don Mattingly to a two-year contract as full-time manager Wednesday, locking in the 65-year-old after he guided the club to a wild-card berth following a midseason coaching change. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announced the decision.

Mattingly took over as interim manager in late April after the Phillies fired Rob Thomson with the team at 9-19. He went 79-55 the rest of the way, and Philadelphia finished the season 88-74 to claim a spot in the NL wild-card round. The Phillies lost to the Atlanta Braves in three games.

The Terms Of The Deal

The agreement covers two seasons, running through 2027. The exact financial terms of the contract were not disclosed. The move makes official what had been speculated since Mattingly piloted the club to its wild-card appearance after taking the job on an interim basis.

Why The Phillies Stuck With Mattingly

The Phillies pursued former Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora on two separate occasions, once in April when Thomson was dismissed and again after the season ended. Cora turned down both overtures, leaving Mattingly as the choice to continue running the dugout.

Mattingly had joined the organization before the 2026 season as bench coach, a role that put him in position to step in when Thomson was let go. His son, Preston Mattingly, serves as the Phillies’ vice president and general manager, adding a family dynamic to the front office that now extends his father’s tenure in Philadelphia.

Thomson had led the Phillies to four consecutive playoff appearances, including the 2022 World Series run and back-to-back NL East titles, before his firing in 2026. The Phillies have made the playoffs in five straight seasons and averaged 91 wins during that stretch, but they have been eliminated earlier in the postseason each year since reaching the 2022 Fall Classic.

Mattingly’s Background And Roster Context

Mattingly spent 14 seasons as a player with the New York Yankees, serving as team captain for five of them. He won the 1985 AL MVP award and earned six All-Star selections during his playing career. As a manager, he led the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2011 to 2015, winning three NL West titles without reaching the World Series, then managed the Miami Marlins from 2016 to 2022, making the playoffs and winning NL Manager of the Year in 2020. His most recent stop before Philadelphia was as bench coach for the 2025 Toronto Blue Jays, who won the AL pennant.

He now inherits a roster built around a veteran core. Cristopher Sanchez, Zack Wheeler and Jesus Luzardo headline the starting rotation, while Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper and Trea Turner anchor an aging lineup. What’s Next

With Mattingly’s deal in place through 2027, the Phillies turn their attention to roster construction for next season. Philadelphia’s front office has not announced further coaching staff moves.
