Ilkay Gundogan is a player nobody expected to see in Manchester City colors at the start of this season. The German was an important player for FC Barcelona, but a sudden shift in plans plus the fall with the club hierarchy made him surplus to requirements. Hence, the 2023 Champions League winners had no option but to resign the player they lost for free to the Catalans in 2023. Gundogan left the Cityzens as the treble-winner. However, despite his experience, the former Borussia Dortmund man is still not playing consistently.
Manchester City Secured First Champions League Win
Manchester City showcased their dominance in the Champions League with a commanding 4-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava, further solidifying their status as one of Europe’s elite teams. The win not only highlighted City’s attacking prowess but also marked a significant milestone, as they extended their unbeaten run in the competition to 25 matches. This impressive feat matches the record previously held by arch-rivals Manchester United from 2007 to 2009.
Central to this triumph was Ilkay Gundogan, who opened the scoring and delivered a standout performance. After returning to Manchester this summer from Barcelona, the 33-year-old quickly reintegrated into the squad, displaying the form that once made him a key player under Pep Guardiola. His impact on the pitch was palpable, and it didn’t go unnoticed by his manager, especially in the Champions League game after a poor show in the domestic league.
Pep Guardiola Praises Ilkay Gundogan’s Resilience

Mandatory Credit: Lucas Boland-USA TODAY SportsFollowing the Champions League match, Pep Guardiola was effusive in his praise for Gundogan. The manager noted that the midfielder had bounced back impressively after a disappointing performance against Newcastle United, where City managed only a 1-1 draw. “Yeah, today he played at the level that we know he can do it,” Guardiola remarked. “He has a strong mentality. The game against Newcastle was not really, really good, one of the worst I’ve ever seen from him in the past eight or nine years, but it happens.”
Guardiola’s comments underscore his understanding of the demands placed on players at the highest level. He emphasized that rhythm is crucial for players in Gundogan’s position, stating, “In his position, holding midfielder, he is so intelligent, and apart from his goal, he made a fantastic game.” With the Champions League match behind them, Manchester City now focuses on the Premier League, where they will host Fulham on Saturday. The reigning English champions will be looking to build on their Champions League momentum and secure three points at home. This match presents an opportunity for the squad to capitalize on their current form and reinforce their title ambitions.
As City gears up for the weekend clash, all eyes will be on Gundogan to see if he can maintain his level of performance. The Premier League champions need to step up their domestic performances after the draw at Newcastle. The absence of Rodri has put a huge dent in their Premier League title defense. However, the fans have seen that the strength of their squad doesn’t revolve around one player.
