Chris Paul is heading back to the Clippers on a 1-year, $3.6 million contract, according to multiple reports. The Point God is returning to the team he had a great run with in the mid-2010s, the Clippers, to be close to his family once again, which is the right move for him personally. He is also reuniting with James Harden from his days with the Rockets, so that should be a great situation for the Clippers as well. Paul is entering his 21st season in the League. Let’s examine his 2024-25 season and see why this is a great piece for the Clippers’ depth.
Chris Paul’s 2024-25 Season in Review
CP3 played in all 82 games and averaged 8.8 points per game and 7.4 assists per game on 42.7% shooting from the field in his 20th season with the San Antonio Spurs. That was a great relationship with that situation, as he was able to be a mentor to Stephon Castle and Victor Wembanyama. Paul is probably going to be in that same role with this Clippers’ team, bringing some valuable bench presence in what will probably be his last season in the league.
This is a storybook type of ending for the veteran point guard, looking at it in detail, because he had some of his best years in the City of Angels with this organization, and is probably their greatest player in franchise history when you look at it. It also brings back some memories for me as a CP3 fan, as well as the first memory I go back to is still hanging up on my wall in my room. The game winner vs the Spurs in Game 7 of the first round in the 2015 Playoffs. So I’m happy that he has decided to end his career with the Clippers.
Final Thoughts
The Clippers should still be a Playoff team this season with Harden and Kawhi Leonard being the first two options, so we should see Paul back in the postseason after missing it last season. As for Paul, this move is the move that gets him to be with Family, and that is the most important thing for a guy in his storybook retirement tour.
Look at the Kobe Bryant retirement tour in 2016, it was perfect for the league and him personally because he was able to celebrate it with his family and also in the bright lights of LA. So I love this signing for Paul as a person and a player, and also this should benefit the Clippers in the long run this season.
