Seven turnovers. That is the number that defines where No. 13 Oregon stands after a 17-15 loss to No. 21 UCLA on Oct. 10, a result that turned the Ducks from double-digit favorites into a team facing serious questions about its Oregon turnover problems and playoff outlook. Oregon was an 11.5-point favorite entering the game, according to CBS Sports. The Ducks left Eugene with their second loss of the season and a path back into playoff contention that now looks narrow at best.

The Turnover Problem That Sank Oregon

Seven Oregon giveaways turned what should have been a comfortable home win into a loss decided in the final minutes. Dylan Raiola, making just his second career start in place of the injured Dante Moore, finished 6-of-19 for 43 yards and two interceptions, according to OregonLive. Coach Dan Lanning did not hide from the issue afterward.

“You’ve got to protect the ball, right? You can coach it and you can say it, but if it shows up, you’re not coaching it well enough. You’re not doing a good enough job there,” Lanning said.

That accountability matters because turnovers, not talent, decided this game. UCLA led in total yards, first downs, third-down conversions and time of possession, per Yahoo Sports, yet still needed a 44-yard touchdown pass from Brock Thomas to Evan Stewart with 2:16 remaining to escape with the win.

Raiola’s Rough Follow-Up Act

Raiola became the first backup quarterback to start for Oregon since Braxton Burmeister in 2017 when he stepped in for Moore, who remained in concussion protocol after being carted off by ambulance in the first quarter of a 41-27 win at USC on Sept. 26. His performance against UCLA was a dramatic reversal from that heroic relief outing in Los Angeles, according to OregonLive, which called his showing against the Bruins an unmitigated disaster. Thomas replaced Raiola in the fourth quarter, and the switch raises a question Lanning will have to answer heading into next week: whether Raiola keeps the job.

An Offensive Line That Could Not Create Room

Oregon’s problems were not limited to the quarterback position. OregonLive described the offensive line as a mess, and the Ducks could not establish any rushing game against UCLA. Without a functioning run game to take pressure off a first-time starter, Oregon’s offense had no margin for the mistakes that piled up.

A Season Defined By Uneven Competition

The loss fits a pattern from Oregon’s first five games, which included lopsided wins over non-conference opponents but underwhelming performances against Power 4 competition, according to Yahoo Sports. The Ducks had not been tested consistently before UCLA exposed the turnover issue and the line’s struggles in the same afternoon.

The Counterpoint: A Missed Two-Point Try Kept Things Close

Oregon was not without a response. A UCLA facemask penalty on the Ducks’ two-point conversion attempt gave Oregon a second chance from half a yard out, though the conversion failed. That sequence shows Oregon had a path to tie the game even after seven turnovers, suggesting the margin between this being a competitive loss and a complete collapse was razor thin. The defense and special teams also played a role in keeping Oregon within one score in the final minutes, even as the offense repeatedly handed UCLA opportunities.

What’s Next For Oregon

Yahoo Sports described Oregon’s playoff and Big Ten title hopes as wildly unlikely after the UCLA loss. The remaining schedule includes just two ranked opponents, and neither currently looks like a sure win, per Yahoo Sports. Oregon travels to Columbus on Nov. 7 to face No. 5 Ohio State, a game that will test whatever answers Lanning finds at quarterback and along the offensive line.

Before that trip, Oregon hosts Nebraska next Saturday in a game that offers an immediate measuring stick for whether the turnover issues were a one-week problem or something more lasting.
