Instant answers
StatMuse-style — answers the exact questionIs Myles Garrett still on the Browns in 2026?
No. Garrett was traded to the Los Angeles Rams on June 1, 2026, for Jared Verse plus future draft picks, ending his nine-season Cleveland career.
Is Joel Bitonio still on the Browns in 2026?
No. Bitonio retired on June 9, 2026, after 12 seasons as Cleveland's starting left guard.
Why do the Browns not count 1996-98 as a franchise gap?
When Art Modell moved the original Browns to Baltimore (becoming the Ravens) in 1996, a league settlement kept the Browns' name, colors, and history in trust in Cleveland; the team returned via expansion draft in 1999 and is not treated as a new expansion franchise.

- CONFLICT: Spotrac's current cap page still lists Myles Garrett (#3, $24.67M cap hit) and Joel Bitonio (#4, $23.5M cap hit) among the Browns' top active-roster cap hits, but Wikipedia and current 2026 PFR stat tables (which show Jared Verse, not Garrett, producing for Cleveland's defense) confirm Garrett was traded to the Rams on 2026-06-01 and Bitonio retired on 2026-06-09. Per task instructions, both were excluded from the roster and topCapHits list above as stale Spotrac entries.
- Possible additional conflict: an older Wikipedia snapshot reported TE David Njoku signing with the LA Chargers on 2026-05-10, but Spotrac's current cap page lists him on Cleveland's active roster with a $9.53M cap hit and he does not appear in current PFR Browns stat leaders (Harold Fannin is now the leading TE). Njoku's true 2026 team status could not be confirmed with certainty from the sources used; leading with the Spotrac (Browns roster) listing but flagging this as unresolved.
- Cap space figure (-$25.47M) and total cap used are from Spotrac, which uses a different top-51/dead-money methodology than OverTheCap (used for the Ravens and Steelers in this dataset); figures are not directly apples-to-apples across teams.

The complete story
Founded in 1944 by Arthur 'Mickey' McBride and named for original coach Paul Brown, the Browns dominated the All-America Football Conference (47-4-3, four straight titles) before joining the NFL in 1950 and winning four more league championships (1950, 1954, 1955, 1964). In 1996, owner Art Modell relocated the franchise to Baltimore to become the Ravens, but a league settlement preserved the Browns' name, colors, and records in trust, and Cleveland returned to the NFL in 1999 via expansion draft. The team has had only a handful of winning seasons since returning, and maintains long-standing rivalries with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens.
