The NFC East standings after Week 5 tell a simple story: nobody in the division is playing like a champion right now. All four teams delivered losing or tying results on Oct. 11, 2026, a collective stumble that leaves open the possibility a sub-.500 record could still be good enough to win the division when the season ends.

The Dallas Cowboys fell to 2-3 with a home loss to the previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night, a defeat that came against an undrafted rookie quarterback in Jalon Daniels. The Washington Commanders slipped to 1-3-1 after blowing a 14-point lead to the Giants, giving up a touchdown in overtime and then failing to get a play off before time expired, turning what should have been a loss into a tie. The Philadelphia Eagles lost 19-17 in London to the Jacksonville Jaguars in what Sporting News described as catastrophic fashion, and the Giants settled for a tie rather than a win despite erasing Washington’s double-digit lead.

Cowboys Hold The Cleanest Record Despite Thursday Night Collapse

At 2-3, Dallas technically owns the best mark of the four NFC East clubs, even after a Thursday night defeat at home to Tampa Bay. The loss came with an undrafted rookie, Daniels, starting at quarterback for the Buccaneers, a result that raised questions about the Cowboys defense under new coordinator Christian Parker. Sporting News reported that head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s job appears less in jeopardy than those of his division rivals, largely because the Cowboys do not typically make coaching changes in the middle of a season. That institutional patience gives Dallas something the other three franchises may not have: stability at the top, even while the record on the field remains shaky.

Eagles’ Collapse In London Adds A New Layer Of Concern

Philadelphia’s defeat carried the most alarming details of the week. The Eagles took a one-point lead with eight seconds left against Jacksonville, only to allow a kickoff return by Ameer Abdullah that set up Cam Little’s 57-yard, game-winning field goal. The loss, played before a record crowd of 61,322 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, also ended a 124-game streak of at least 40 rushing yards, the longest active streak in the NFL entering Week 5. Philadelphia managed just 22 rushing yards, its fewest since Week 7 of 2015.

The Eagles also lost running back Will Shipley to a foot injury and pass rusher Jalyx Hunt to an ankle and knee injury during the game. Jalen Carter produced two strip-sacks of Trevor Lawrence in the first half, though Philadelphia could not recover either fumble, and the Jaguars generated pressure on 54.8% of Jalen Hurts’ dropbacks while sacking him just once. A fight that led to ejections for Philadelphia’s Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Jacksonville’s Bryan Thomas Jr. underscored a chippy, frustrating afternoon for a team Sporting News says was already watching coach Nick Sirianni over its offensive production before Sunday’s loss.

Commanders’ Late-Game Letdown Raises The Hottest Coaching Seat

No divisional result looked worse on paper than Washington’s. The Commanders led the Giants by 14 points before an overtime collapse that ended in a tie, with Washington’s offense unable to even snap the ball before the clock expired. Sporting News called it a game where “the Commanders can’t get the play off in time and this game ends in a tie,” a sequence that left Washington at 1-3-1 and head coach Dan Quinn facing what the outlet described as the hottest seat of any NFC East coach.

The Counterpoint: A Tie Still Beats A Loss

The fairest pushback on ranking Dallas ahead of the pack is that the Giants and Commanders avoided an outright defeat in Week 5, while both Dallas and Philadelphia took losses. A tie adds half a win and half a loss to a record rather than a full loss, meaning New York and Washington did not fall further behind in the loss column the way the Cowboys and Eagles did. If close results keep piling up the way they did in Week 5, with overtime tie-breakers, last-second field goals and games decided in the final seconds, the gap between first and last in the NFC East could stay thin enough that no team separates itself convincingly for weeks to come.

What To Watch Next

Each NFC East team now faces a stretch where health and coaching stability matter as much as scheme. Philadelphia will need to replace Shipley and monitor Hunt’s ankle and knee injury while trying to fix a rushing attack that just hit its lowest output in more than a decade. Dallas will look to Christian Parker’s defense to clean up the issues exposed by Tampa Bay, and the staff changes Schottenheimer is reportedly weighing after the Bucs loss could shape the next several weeks.

Washington’s ability to close out games will be tested again as speculation builds around Quinn’s seat, and Dallas fans will keep an eye on whether Joey Porter Jr. can help fix the defense after his arrival. With every team still searching for consistency, the NFC East standings heading into Week 6 remain as unsettled as they were at kickoff in Week 5.
