New York Mets Roundup 11/4

Luis Severino

The New York Mets had a busy Monday as they began the 2024 MLB Offseason. The New York Mets are looking to build upon a successful 2024 season that saw them advance to the NLCS where they eventually lost in six games to the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. New York’s offense failed to keep pace with a Los Angeles offense that scored the most runs of any playoff series in league history.

New York has many issues facing them this offseason and President of Baseball Operations David Stearns made some moves to help the team get on track for 2025 and beyond. What moves did the New York Mets make today and how it will impact them this offseason?

New York Mets Make Contract Decisions

The New York Mets extended qualifying offers to three players which were critical to their successful 2024 season. Pete Alonso, Sean Manaea, and Luis Severino all received a one-year $21.05 million contract for 2025. Any player who declines the offer will hit the open market as a free agent. If the player then decides to leave the New York Mets in free agency, the team would receive draft pick compensation. Alonso, Manaea, and Severino have until November 19 to make a decision. New York would like to re-sign all three players, but to do so they may have to navigate 29 other suitors.

Other players on New York’s roster who will be free agents this offseason are Pitcher Joey Lucchesi and Right Fielder DJ Stewart. Lucchesi has been with New York since 2021 and Stewart has been with the club since 2023. The team also declined the $7.75 million player option on Relief Pitcher Phil Maton and paid a $250,00 buyout to get out of the contract. Maton was acquired by the New York Mets on July 9 from the Tampa Bay Rays. New York has decided to move on from these three ancillary pieces.

New York Rewards Coaching Staff

Following a successful season, David Stearns announced the team has decided to retain all the members of their 2024 coaching staff. This includes Manager Carlos Mendoza who had a standout first year at the helm with New York. Mendoza’s tenure in New York got off to a rocky start.

The team had a 7.9% chance to make the MLB Playoffs according to FanGraphs with a 24-35 record on June 2. The team would go 65-38 over the remainder of the season to grab the third National League Wild Card spot. This great final four months of the regular season led to the coaching staff having job security heading into 2025.

Final Thoughts

The New York Mets have an important offseason where they will reportedly be eyeing big-ticket free agents including New York Yankees Right Fielder Juan Soto and bringing back franchise cornerstone, Alonso. Today’s moves were a necessary first step as the team develops an offseason plan.
