New York Mets Jeff McNeil Out 4-6 Weeks With Wrist Fracture

The New York Mets had a rough nigh on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

New York Mets Second Baseman Jeff McNeil is out for 4-6 weeks with a right wrist fracture. New York Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza announced the news before this afternoon’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. McNeil was hit on the wrist by Cincinnati Reds Relief Pitcher Brandon Williamson in the fifth inning of last night’s 6-4 walk-off victory. He left the game and was replaced by Jose Iglesias. Iglesias will play second baseman in McNeil’s absence.

McNeil was surprised this injury would keep him out for an extended period: “I thought nothing of it really, it was a breaking ball: 95 percent sure it hit the [wrist] guard I was wearing. It didn’t hurt that bad running the bases, and then I started to feel it a little bit warming up the next inning, just throwing the ball to first base.”

He would remain in the game until the bottom of the sixth inning. McNeil has a .238 batting average with 12 home runs and 44 RBI this season. How will the New York Mets fare in Jeff McNeil’s absence?

Jeff McNeil Career Summary

McNeil made his MLB debut with the New York Mets in 2018. He finished sixth in Rookie of the Year in 2018 and is a two-time MLB All-Star(2019, 2022). He also won the Silver Slugger Award in 2022 and the MLB Batting Title with a .326 batting average. 2022 was a benchmark year for the two-time all-star. He has struggled over the last two seasons at the plate following his historic 2022 campaign. He is a career .289 hitter with 68 home runs and 313 RBI.

New York Mets Hot Streak Leads To Great Playoff Position

The New York Mets have been the hottest team in Major League Baseball over the past week and a half. They are winners of eight straight games and are tied with the Atlanta Braves for the third and final National League Wild Card spot. They now have a 48% chance to make the MLB Playoffs according to FanGraphs. This injury news comes at a terrible time for the ballclub as they have only 21 games remaining in the 2024 regular season.

New York is looking to keep this momentum going and make the MLB Playoffs for the second time in the last three years. McNeil will only be able to return this season if the New York Mets can go on a deep playoff run. This year’s Mets team has overcome great adversity to put itself in a prime position this late in the MLB season. They cannot allow this injury news to derail what has the possibility of a September to remember in Queens.
