The injury bug has bitten the New York Giants early in their Sunday night showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs, and it’s hitting them where it hurts: the backfield. An offense already managing injuries to key players now faces more uncertainty as running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. was forced to exit with a shoulder injury in the first quarter. He will not return to the game tonight.

The incident has put an immediate strain on a thinly-rostered position, forcing the Giants to rethink their ground game on the fly.

Dissecting the Tyrone Tracy Jr. Injury

The injury occurred with 1:42 left in the opening quarter on what seemed like a routine play. On a 2nd-and-8 near midfield, quarterback Russell Wilson connected with Tracy on a check-down pass to the left flat. Tracy secured the catch and turned upfield for a three-yard gain before being driven out of bounds by Chiefs cornerback Jaylen Watson.

Replays show Tracy’s right arm getting caught awkwardly between defenders during the tackle. He immediately grabbed his shoulder after hitting the turf. While he managed to get to his feet without assistance, he was visibly grimacing as a trainer supported his right arm on the walk across the field to the Giants’ sideline. The team quickly designated him as questionable to return.

Before the injury, Tracy was the focal point of the New York Giants’ offense. He was on the field for the initial two snaps and had already accumulated seven carries for 29 yards and two catches for seven yards, demonstrating his importance to the offensive game plan.

The New York Giants Depth Chart Dilemma

With Tracy sidelined, the offensive load now shifts to rookie Cam Skattebo and veteran Devin Singletary. The New York Giants came into the contest with only three active running backs, a decision that is now under immediate scrutiny. Even before kickoff, there were rumblings that Skattebo’s role would be expanded, but Tracy’s injury has turned that possibility into a necessity.

The coaching staff must now adjust their strategy, relying on two backs with distinctly different levels of experience. Skattebo, a promising rookie, will face a baptism by fire against a formidable Chiefs defense. Singletary’s veteran presence will be crucial, but replacing Tracy’s production and versatility will be a significant challenge.

A Growing List of Concerns

Tracy’s injury wasn’t the only medical scare of the evening for the New York Giants. The team was already on high alert after kicker Graham Gano suffered an apparent groin injury during pregame warmups. Although Gano was cleared to play, having two key players deal with injuries so early in a crucial game highlights the physical toll of the league.

As the game progresses, the team’s ability to adapt to these personnel losses will be a critical storyline. For the Giants, the question is no longer just about beating the Chiefs—it’s about surviving the game intact. The status of Tracy’s shoulder will be a major point of concern heading into next week.
