New Orleans Saints Hire Kellen Moore As Next Head Coach

New Orleans Saints

In a move that was a mere formality, the New Orleans Saints hired former Philadelphia Eagles Offense Coordinator Kellen Moore to be their next head coach. Moore was the franchise’s choice for a while, but the Saints had to wait until the postseason run of the Philadelphia Eagles ended. It concluded with them dismantling the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in Super Bowl LIX.

Moore oversaw an Eagles offense that set a postseason record for points scored. Even though the New Orleans Saints were always going to hire him, Moore’s stock has risen dramatically over the past month. Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Nick Sirianni knew Moore would be departing the team following the Super Bowl. He made a last-ditch effort imploring Moore to stick around. That plea fell on deaf ears. Will Moore be a successful head coach for the New Orleans Saints?

New Orleans Saints Offseason Summary

It was a rough season for the Saints. They finished 5-12 and fired Head Coach Dennis Allen midseason following seven consecutive losses. New Orleans had a revolving door at the quarterback position. That is not a great recipe for on-field success. Moore’s first order of business this offseason will be to decide what to do with Quarterback Derek Carr. His status with the team is not entrenched heading into the offseason.

Moore comes to a Saints team in a terrible salary cap situation. They are $60 million over the 2025 cap without making a single offseason move. That situation will hamstring Moore and the New Orleans Saints this offseason. They must decide if they want to tear the team down and start a rebuild or be aggressive in the offseason and keep pushing their cap issues down the road.

Final Thoughts

Moore’s coaching stock was never lower than it was last offseason when hired to be the Eagles OC. He left the Dallas Cowboys during the 2023 offseason and their offense got better without him leading them. Moore was the OC for the Los Angeles Chargers during the 2023-24 season and did not have a successful one-year stint with the team. Just a year later he was hired as the next New Orleans Saints head coach. It has been a whirlwind few years for the offensive coordinator. It ended with a Super Bowl and a promotion.
