Cleveland Browns Defensive End Myles Garrett Requests a Trade

Cleveland Browns

Cleveland Browns Defensive End Myles Garrett requested a trade from the franchise on Monday. He released a statement outlining his thought process for wanting to get out of Cleveland. Some of the statement said: “While I’ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stage won’t allow me to be complacent…With that in mind, I have requested to be traded from the Cleveland Browns.”

Browns General Manager Andrew Berry was steadfast last week at the Senior Bowl regarding his desire to not trade the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. Berry said that even if offered two first-round picks, he would not trade Garrett. It will be interesting which team blinks first in this standoff and how this situation resolves itself. Where will Garett be come next season?

Myles Garrett Career Summary

Garrett has been one of the best defensive players in the league since his rookie season in 2017. His accolades include being named the 2023 Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year, a six-time Pro Bowler, four-time All-Pro, and six straight seasons with double-digit sacks. He is also amid 12+ sacks in five consecutive seasons.

Garrett is coming off another great season with the Cleveland Browns. He was second in the league with 14 sacks and tied for ninth with three forced fumbles. Even with another All-Pro season from the defensive end, Cleveland had a miserable season. They finished a putrid 3-14 and have the No. 2 pick in April’s NFL Draft.

Final Thoughts

Today’s trade request did not come as a complete surprise as the star defensive player mentioned in December he did not have interest in another rebuild in Cleveland. He has finished with a losing record in six of his eight career season. Cleveland if they decide to trade Garrett may elect to do so before March 16 when he is due a $5 million roster bonus.

If Cleveland changes its tune over the NFL Offseason, Garrett will have a boatload of suitors. It is not every offseason that NFL teams get a chance to acquire arguably the best defensive player in the league. The Cleveland Browns-Myles Garrett saga will be one of the biggest stories this spring in the National Football League. Only time will tell how this situation will resolve itself.
