MLB Set for Fantastic Second Half As Many Divisions Are Still Up For Contention
MLB is set for a fantastic second half. All six of the divisions have compelling stories, five of the six are very close, and virtually every team can make the playoffs. In this article, we will go through each division and highlight the races and compelling stories. Before we get started, a word about the picture: the Tarps Off! movement is insane and is adding excitement to baseball.
There is another introductory note that is worth mentioning. The American League is much worse than the National League. So much so that the National League is favored to win Tuesday night’s All-Star game. This has a real effect on the playoff race. Because most teams in the American League are mired in mediocrity, almost all of them are in playoff contention. Do you think that means they will not trade anybody away?
MLB Divisions Right Now

MLB is set for a fantastic finish to the 2026 season. The expansion of the playoffs and the parity in the league mean that most teams are in contention. In addition, there are several compelling stories that make the league interesting to follow.
American League East
One of the most interesting stories in baseball is the success of the Tampa Bay Rays. They are in first place in this division, they get more out of less than any team in baseball, have an exciting young roster, and basically never lose. The Yankees are three games back and have won four games in a row. They have a lot of injuries right now, and should get key players back for the playoff push.
The Boston Red Sox, a flawed team, have won 9 games in a row to vault into contention. The Baltimore Orioles have also won four games in a row, but have dissappointed, the the defending American League Champion Toronto Blue Jays are, ironically, in last place.
American League Central
The surprising Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians are tied for first place. The White Sox are one of the best stories in MLB. The Minnesota Twins are in third place, only three games back. The Detroit Tigers are in fourth, and one of the most compelling stories in MLB is whether they will trade ace Tarik Skubal. The Kansas City Royals are bringing up the rear and are a poor 13 games out.
American League West
It seems like no team wants to win this division. Right now, the Texas Rangers are in first place. They are only 49-47 and need bullpen help. The Seattle Mariners are in second place. They appeared in the ALCS last season and are one game under .500. The Athletics are an interesting team. Will they get a city and stadium? The Los Angeles Angels are awful and 11.5 games out of first place.
National League East
The Atlanta Braves have been good all season, but right now are only 2 games in front of the white-hot Philadelphia Phillies. The Miami Marlins are only 4 games back and have been hot as well. The Washington Nationals are 8 games back, but as they just demonstrated, they have significant bullpen issues. How bad the New York Mets have been, they are 16 games out of first place, a major story in MLB.
National League Central
Another good story in MLB has been how good the first-place Milwaukee Brewers have been. The Chicago Cubs are in second place, but have been very inconsistent this year. The St. Louis Cardinals have overachieved and are in third place. The Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds round out the division and may be sellers, especially the Reds.
National League West
The Los Angeles Dodgers have the biggest lead in baseball and are the front-runners to be 2026 World Champions. They lead the Arizona Diamondbacks by 11.5 games and the San Diego Padres by 12.5 games. The lead is 19.5 games over the San Francisco Giants and 22.5 games over the Colorado Rockies. The dominance of the Dodgers has been one of the biggest stories in MLB.

Conclusion
It is funny to think, with all this excitement, that this season could be it. There may be a lockout in 2027. At issue is a salary cap. The owners want one, and the players do not. The two sides are very far apart. So, greed may deprive us all of a great product. It is a shame.
