The Minnesota Vikings locked up Head Coach Kevin O’Connell for years to come on Tuesday afternoon. He and the team had been unable to agree to a contract extension before the 2024-2025 season. Before the contract extension, the star coach was slated to enter the 2025 season as his final year under contract. O’Connell’s contract situation led to speculation that he would be coaching another team next season via a trade for his services. That speculation was put to rest by today’s news.
O’Connell has been at the helm of the Minnesota Vikings for three seasons with a regular season record of 34-17. He is 0-2 in the NFL Playoffs. He has struggled in the postseason during his coaching career. Will O’Connell be able to get over the hump in the postseason with the Minnesota Vikings?
Minnesota Vikings Season Summary
🚨 🚨 🚨
The #Vikings and Coach of The Year candidate Kevin O’Connell have agreed to terms on a blockbuster, multi-year extension that keeps him in Minnesota for years to come, per me and @TomPelissero.

The Vikings were playing for the top seed in the NFC at the Detroit Lions in Week 18. Unfortunately, that is when things came crashing down for the team. They were embarrassed 31-9 by the Lions and walloped 27-9 by the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Wild Card Round. The issue for the team in both those games was the play of the Minnesota Vikings offense and Quarterback Sam Darnold.
That did not bathe O’Connell in glory. He is viewed as one of the best offensive minds in the league. Darnold had one touchdown over Minnesota’s final two games as a great regular season was undone by two miserable games. O’Connell, even with a disappointing end of the season, is a top-flight coach. He has taken two quarterbacks, Darnold and Kirk Cousins, to 13+ win seasons. Neither Darnold nor Cousins are viewed as one of the league’s best quarterbacks. Nevertheless, O’Connell helped guide them to the best seasons of their career.
Final Thoughts
O’Connell deserved a contract extension with the Minnesota Vikings as he is a great coach. Even though he has struggled in the NFL Playoffs, that does not overshadow his body of work. O’Connell is also a sizable favorite to win his first Coach of the Year Award next month. O’Connell and the Vikings now focus on building upon a strong regular season through free agency and the upcoming draft.
