Florida State president Richard McCullough and interim athletic director Bruce Warwick addressed the Mike Norvell firing decision during a media availability Sunday evening, hours after the school dismissed its head coach following a 36-24 home loss to Clemson. The session marked the first time university leadership spoke publicly about the move since the announcement, according to 247Sports.
Norvell finished his seven seasons at Florida State with a 41-39 overall record and a 23-30 mark in ACC play. The Seminoles stood 3-5 overall at the time of his dismissal, a decision that came on a day that also saw defensive coordinator Tony White fired.
McCullough’s Statement On The Coaching Change
McCullough framed the move as a leadership change rather than a referendum on any single game. “We have made the decision to change the leadership of our football program,” McCullough said, according to Yahoo Sports. “We thank Mike Norvell for his commitment and service to Florida State and wish him and his family the very best.
We understand the deep passion of Seminole fans and share their high expectations for this program. We are confident in Rick Stockstill’s ability to provide steady leadership during this transition.”
On the search for a permanent replacement, McCullough said the university would look nationally rather than fill the job quickly. “We will conduct a thorough national search for the program’s next leader, someone who embraces Florida State’s tradition of championship athletics and our standard of excellence,” McCullough said, per CBS Sports.
What The Firing Means For Florida State’s Structure
The Norvell firing decision lands in the middle of an athletic department already in transition. McCullough is handling the football coaching change while Florida State searches for a permanent athletic director after firing Mike Alford in September. Warwick is serving in the interim athletic director role during that search.
Rick Stockstill, Florida State’s director of scouting, was elevated to interim head coach. Stockstill spent 18 seasons at Middle Tennessee State, compiling a 113-111 record with 10 bowl appearances before joining the Seminoles’ staff.
Context On Norvell’s Tenure
Florida State hired Norvell away from Memphis in 2020, where he had gone 38-16 and won an American Athletic Conference title. His best season came in 2023, when the Seminoles went 13-1, Norvell was named Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year and ACC Coach of the Year, and Florida State was still left out of the four-team College Football Playoff.
That peak proved to be an outlier. Florida State managed only two winning seasons under Norvell, in 2022 and 2023, and went 10-22 from 2024 through his firing this season. The program’s past 17 losses have come in 17 of its past 21 conference games. Reported buyout figures for Norvell vary, with one report putting the number above $50 million and another at $46 million.
What’s Next
Stockstill takes over as interim head coach immediately, with Florida State now 3-5 on the season. McCullough said the national search for a permanent coach is underway, though no timeline for hiring a successor has been announced. The university has not detailed further plans for its separate athletic director search beyond Warwick’s current interim role.
