Maja Chwalinska claimed the Maja Chwalinska Wuhan Open title on Sunday, defeating World No. 170 Sonay Kartal 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the final to capture her first WTA 1000 crown. The No. 16 seed needed two hours and 43 minutes to close out the victory, rallying from a set and a break down before winning the final five games of the match.

The win caps a breakout season for the 25-year-old Pole, who reached the French Open final earlier in the year and has now added a WTA 1000 title to her resume just months later.

The Main Development

Chwalinska dropped the opening set 6-2 and fell behind a break in the second before turning the match around. She saved three break points while serving for the match and won the last five games to seal it, according to WTA. The second set alone stretched to 71 minutes.

Speaking afterward, Chwalinska reflected on the emotional weight of the title. “It means a lot. It tastes very sweet, I must admit.

I feel like I still don’t realize that I won. So I feel like I just need a few days,” she said in her post-match press conference, per WTA. She added that the stretch after her French Open final appearance had not been easy, saying, “after the French Open it was obviously amazing, but then I had some tough moments.

I feel like people also were very rough towards me.”

Kartal, who was bidding for her own maiden WTA 1000 title, credited her support team after the loss. “That was one heck of a battle, Maja. I hope I can be in many more of these finals,” she said, according to Sky Sports. “It was not the result I wanted today but those people in my box are the reason I am healthy, I am here and why I am back to fitness.”

What It Means For Chwalinska’s Breakout Season

The title is the clearest marker yet of how far Chwalinska has come in 2026. She entered the year ranked around No. 140 with a specific goal in mind. “I started the season, I think, ranked like 140 and my goal was to be Top 100 this year. I think I did a pretty good job,” she said in her press conference.

Chwalinska became the fourth player on the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz since 2009 to win her first title at the WTA 1000 level. She is also the first left-hander to win a WTA 1000 event since Petra Kvitova took Miami in 2023, and just the third Polish player to lift a WTA 1000 trophy, following Agnieszka Radwanska and Iga Swiatek.

Her path through the draw included a come-from-behind win over Marie Bouzkova in the second round after dropping the first set, a victory over No. 10 seed Iva Jovic to reach the semifinals, and a win against former World No. 3 Maria Sakkari. She then beat Swiatek herself in the semifinals before facing Kartal in the final.

Context: A Season Of Breakthroughs

Chwalinska’s title made her the fourth player to win a maiden WTA 1000 crown in 2026, joining Karolina Muchova in Doha, Marta Kostyuk in Madrid and Zheng Qinwen in Beijing. The trend reflects a season in which several players outside the usual circle of top contenders have broken through at the tour’s biggest events below Grand Slam level.

For Kartal, the runner-up finish still carried significant weight. Her run through the draw, which included wins over Belinda Bencic, Jasmine Paolini, Elina Svitolina and Jelena Ostapenko, will lift her back into the top 50 and make her the new British No. 1 on Monday. “We have had an unbelievable week. Not many people expected me to be here and bring these levels, so thank you, guys,” Kartal said.

What’s Next

Chwalinska closes out her breakout season with a WTA 1000 title added to her French Open final run, a combination that has defined her rise from outside the top 100 to the sport’s upper tier in 2026. Kartal, fresh off her deepest WTA 1000 run, takes over as British No. 1 starting Monday as both players look ahead to the remainder of the tour calendar.
