Alexander Zverev’s No. 1 ranking became official Monday, Nov. 2, 2026, making the German the 30th different player to top the ATP rankings since the early 1970s. Zverev, 29, replaces Jannik Sinner atop the standings and becomes the oldest player to reach No. 1 for the first time since 1974.

The move completes a climb that became mathematically certain weeks earlier, when a result elsewhere on tour cleared Zverev’s path to the top spot regardless of his own schedule.

How Zverev Clinched The Alexander Zverev No. 1 Ranking

Zverev secured the year-end No. 1 ranking on Oct. 12, 2026, after Carlos Alcaraz was upset by Zizou Bergs at the Shanghai Masters, according to Yahoo Sports. That result eliminated the scenario in which Alcaraz could have caught Zverev in the points race, locking in the German’s place at the top of the rankings weeks before the number became official.

Zverev’s own form in the days before the ranking took effect was far from flawless. He lost to Alex de Minaur 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4) in the Vienna Erste Bank Open semifinals on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026, according to Sportsnet. The loss came two days before his ascent to No. 1 became official, underscoring that the ranking was already decided by his body of work across the season rather than any single tournament.

What It Means

Zverev becomes the first German man in tennis history to finish a season as the world’s top-ranked player. The achievement places him alongside the sport’s most accomplished names in a club limited to 30 members since the early 1970s, and it ends Sinner’s stretch at the summit of the rankings.

Novak Djokovic praised Zverev’s rise to the top spot, framing it as a product of sustained performance rather than a single result. “Congratulations to Sascha Zverev. He has entered a very illustrious circle, let’s say, a very special club, the club of 30, the 30th No 1 in the world since the early 70s,” Djokovic said.

“Congratulations, because nothing is given to you for free. It’s a tough job, you can’t just play one tournament, you have to be the best player in the world for months on end. He has literally earned it through his own hard work.

He really found his game through fighting for it. I found the consistency at the beginning of the year showed that you could already tell this year a different Sascha Zverev is playing tennis compared to last year.”

Djokovic’s comments point to a season-long pattern rather than a late surge, crediting Zverev’s consistency from the start of the year as the foundation for the ranking change. Reaching No. 1 at 29 also marks a later peak than most players who have held the top ranking, a detail that matches the historical note that he is the oldest first-time No. 1 since 1974.

Context Behind The Climb

Zverev’s path to No. 1 has been covered in Total Apex Sports’ earlier report on his year-end No. 1 ranking, which tracked the points race that led to this week’s confirmation. Sinner’s exit from the top spot follows a season in which the Italian dealt with a knee injury that ultimately ended his 2026 campaign, detailed in Total Apex Sports’ coverage of the Jannik Sinner injury.

Zverev’s rivalry with Djokovic has also been a storyline this season, including their meeting covered in Djokovic vs Zverev: Huge Test. The Vienna loss to de Minaur was Zverev’s most recent result before the ranking officially changed hands.

What’s Next

Zverev now carries the No. 1 ranking into the remainder of the 2026 season as the ATP Tour heads toward its year-end events. No official date for his next tournament has been specified in available reporting.
