Luka Dončić’s historic stat line of 45 points, 15 rebounds, eight three-pointers and five steals made him the first player in NBA history to reach all of those marks in a single game. The Los Angeles Lakers guard delivered the performance Sunday in a 131-125 win over the Toronto Raptors, pushing Los Angeles to 5-2 on the season.
Dončić also tallied six assists, giving him a full stat sheet that included at least 45 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, five steals and five made threes, a combination no other player has ever recorded in a game, according to Yahoo Sports.
The Main Development: A First-Half Burst That Rewrote The Record Book
The bulk of Dončić’s defensive damage came early. He recorded eight of his five total steals in the first half alone, and four of those came in the first quarter. By halftime, he had 24 points, eight rebounds, four assists and a career-high five steals.
That half alone made Dončić the first player in the NBA‘s play-by-play era, which dates to the 1997-98 season, to post 20 points, five rebounds, five three-pointers and five steals before the break. He also became the first point guard in league history to log five steals and five three-pointers in a half, according to Yahoo Sports.
Lakers center Walker Kessler, who finished with 16 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks, credited Dončić’s awareness on the defensive end. “Luka doesn’t get enough credit for his defense. He’s a very high IQ individual when it comes to being on the court, so his positional defense, just being in the right spots at the right time, is really good and it showed tonight,” Kessler said.
What It Means: Another Data Point In An MVP-Caliber Stretch
Dončić’s eight threes fell one shy of his career high, and he had already scored 37 points before the fourth quarter even started. The 45-point night marked his fourth straight game with at least 35 points and his fourth consecutive game scoring 37 or more, a stretch the Sporting News flagged as part of an “incredible Lakers scoring trend” in its report on the win.
The game also gave Dončić his 20th outing with at least 40 points in just 98 regular-season appearances with Los Angeles, and his second double-double of the year. A six-time All-Star and two-time scoring champion, Dončić is making an early-season case for MVP honors, according to Yahoo Sports.
Context: Lakers Survive A Late Collapse
Los Angeles shot better than 53% from the field and nearly 49% from three-point range for the game, but the Raptors made it closer than the final margin suggested. The Lakers led 104-82 entering the fourth quarter, only to get outscored 43-27 in the final period while committing 24 turnovers for the night.
Toronto got 29 points from Scottie Barnes and 22 points and 10 rebounds from RJ Barrett in the comeback bid that fell short. Austin Reaves chipped in 19 points for the Lakers, who were coming off a disappointing loss to the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 30.
What’s Next
The Lakers face a quick turnaround with a back-to-back against the Miami Heat on Monday. Speaking on Spectrum SportsNet after the win, Dončić did not commit to playing in that game. “I got to get rest, a cold tub, a massage, and rest and see you tomorrow,” he said, leaving his status for the Heat matchup uncertain.
