The Detroit Lions beat the Minnesota Vikings 19-15 on Sunday at Ford Field. Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown as Detroit’s ground game overwhelmed Minnesota’s defense. Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 153 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, and Jameson Williams caught the go-ahead score with 4:35 left in the fourth quarter. The win moved Detroit to 5-2, while Minnesota fell to 6-1.

Detroit led 6-0 after Jake Bates’ 25-yard field goal in the first quarter. Justin Jefferson scored on a 1-yard pass from Murray in the second quarter, then Bates kicked a 37-yarder before halftime to make it 7-6 at the break. Gibbs broke free on a 30-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, but Detroit’s two-point conversion failed, leaving the Lions ahead 12-7.

Minnesota answered when Murray hit T.J. Hockenson for an 8-yard touchdown and found Jordan Addison for a two-point conversion, putting the Vikings ahead 15-12 with 8:44 left. Jared Goff’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Jameson Williams with 4:35 remaining gave Detroit the lead for good.

Takeaways From Lions’ Win Over Vikings

Detroit’s ground game dominated the box score

The Lions out-rushed Minnesota 230 to 81 and finished with 384 total yards compared to the Vikings’ 266. Detroit ran the ball 39 times at 5.9 yards per carry, controlling the game despite converting just 5 of 13 third downs. Gibbs accounted for two-thirds of that rushing output, and Sione Vaki added 65 yards on 11 carries.

Murray’s two touchdown passes weren’t enough

Kyler Murray completed 17 of 29 passes for 210 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. His scoring strikes to Justin Jefferson and Hockenson gave Minnesota a chance in both the second and fourth quarters, but the Vikings offense managed only 81 rushing yards and converted just 3 of 10 third downs, limiting their ability to control the clock.

A missed two-point conversion loomed late

Detroit’s two-point conversion attempt failed after Gibbs’ third-quarter touchdown, leaving the score at 12-7 instead of 14-7. That gap meant Minnesota’s touchdown and successful two-point conversion in the fourth quarter put the Vikings ahead 15-12 rather than leaving Detroit with a cushion, setting up Williams’ go-ahead touchdown as the decisive answer.

Player Of The Game: Jahmyr Gibbs

Gibbs finished with 23 carries for 153 yards and a touchdown, a 6.7 yards-per-carry average that powered Detroit’s offensive plan. His 30-yard touchdown run in the third quarter shifted momentum after Minnesota had taken a 7-6 lead into halftime.

Lions Vs Vikings By The Numbers

Detroit out-gained Minnesota 384 to 266 in total yards despite running 18 more offensive plays, 68 to 50. The Lions’ rushing total of 230 yards nearly tripled the Vikings’ 81 on the ground. Minnesota was more efficient through the air, averaging 7.2 yards per pass attempt for Murray compared to 7.0 for Goff, though Goff completed a higher percentage of his throws at 18 of 25.

Each team turned the ball over once, with D.J. Reed intercepting Murray for Detroit and James Pierre intercepting Goff for Minnesota. Minnesota was flagged five times for 40 yards; Detroit seven times for 76 yards.

What’s Next

Minnesota remains atop the NFC North at 6-1, while Detroit improved to 5-2. Both teams play again in Week 9.
