Liberty defeated Delaware 30-14 on Friday in a Conference USA opener. Running back Kam Davis rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Flames.

Davis broke the game open with a 56-yard touchdown run on third-and-2 midway through the second quarter. The Flames’ ground game dominated; Delaware did not score until the fourth quarter, when backups Braden Streeter and Tyler Bell each threw touchdown passes.

Flames vs Blue Hens: key moments

Chase Reeves set the tone early, nailing field goals of 47 and 30 yards in the first quarter to make it 6-0. The Flames then turned to their ground game. Davis’s 56-yard burst made it 13-0, and Peyton Jones capped a 12-play, 98-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run with 39 seconds left in the half, sending Liberty into the break ahead 20-0.

Reeves added a 22-yard field goal early in the third quarter for a 23-0 cushion, and Davis punched in a 5-yard touchdown run early in the fourth to make it 30-0. Delaware scored for the first time with 9:38 left in the fourth quarter, when Streeter hit Donovan Lewis for a 58-yard touchdown. Bell added a 27-yard touchdown pass to Matthew McKinley-Daniels with 1:35 left, but the rally was far too late.

Top performers

Davis finished with 17 carries for 147 yards and two scores, including 123 yards on just nine carries in the first half. Quarterback Deshawn Purdie went 13 of 20 for 157 yards, with Makai Jackson hauling in five catches for 90 yards to lead all receivers. Liberty piled up 439 total yards, including 282 on the ground at 6.0 yards per carry, and did not turn the ball over.

For Delaware, Archield led the offense before giving way to Streeter and Bell in relief. Bryson Graves caught three passes for 69 yards, and linebacker Kahlil Ali paced the defense with eight tackles. The Blue Hens committed two turnovers, including a fumble lost by Archield and an interception thrown by Streeter, and converted just 2 of 13 third-down tries.

What it means

Liberty opened Conference USA play with a statement, controlling the clock for 38:31 and piling up 23 first downs against a Delaware defense that had no answer for Davis or the Flames’ rushing attack.

Delaware is still searching for answers after Archield made his first career start, stepping in for Nick Minnicucci, who was injured last week in a 42-3 loss at Virginia, according to CBS Sports. The Blue Hens now sit 2-3 with conference play underway and little margin for error.

What’s next

Liberty hosts Sam Houston on Thursday. Delaware travels to Middle Tennessee on Oct. 13 in search of its first Conference USA win.
