LeBron James, at the ripe old age of 40 and heading into his 23rd season, is about to get some reps in with the South Bay Lakers. Let that sink in. The man who has spent more than two decades dominating the league is taking a detour to the G League practice court.
This isn’t a punishment or a demotion; it’s the next chapter in the most fascinating comeback story of the season. Sidelined by a pesky case of sciatica that sounds more like an ailment your grandpa complains about, James has been a ghost since media day. The Lakers have been tight-lipped, offering no timeline, leaving fans and pundits to wonder when, or if, we’d see him back in action.
And yet, here we are. This move signals that the return is imminent. It’s the final tune-up before he reclaims his throne.
How Will James Impact the Lakers?
The Lakers, to their credit, haven’t completely imploded without him. They’ve managed an impressive 7-2 start, even with Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves also nursing injuries. It’s a testament to their depth, but let’s be real: this team isn’t winning a championship without a healthy James.
His return isn’t just about adding a legendary player back to the lineup. It’s about restoring the natural order of things in L.A. Reaves, fresh off his own hamstring injury, couldn’t help but chuckle at the idea of James playing in a G League game. But he knows what’s coming. “The thing about him is he understands the game, as everybody knows,” Reaves said. “He knows when he comes back, ‘This is how I can help the team.’”
That’s the genius of James. He’s been watching, analyzing, and plotting. He’s not just going to slot back in; he’s going to elevate everyone around him, plugging the gaps he’s identified from the sidelines.
When Will James Return?
While James won’t be joining the team on their current road trip, all eyes are on the November 18 home game against the Utah Jazz. Could that be the night? The energy in Crypto.com Arena will be electric. When he finally steps onto the court, he’ll officially break the record for the most seasons ever played in the NBA. It is a record that feels almost as unbreakable as his all-time scoring title.
Think about it: his career started before his own son and current teammate, Bronny James, was even a year old. It is a level of longevity that defies logic. So, a little practice with the South Bay squad? That’s just another footnote in the epic saga of LeBron James. The King is getting ready for his coronation, and the league is on notice.
