The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Heat 138-117 Monday night at crypto.com Arena behind 42 points and 13 assists from Luka Doncic. The Lakers improved to 6-2 while Miami fell to 2-5 after shooting 51% from the field but still trailing by as many as 24 points.
Los Angeles took control in the second quarter, outscoring Miami 42-21 across the first two frames combined to build a double-digit cushion the Heat never threatened again. Giannis Antetokounmpo led Miami with 30 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists, but the Heat got little scoring punch outside of him and Klay Thompson, who added 19 points.
Key Moments And How The Lakers Pulled Away
The Lakers’ win over the Heat was built on a sustained first-half surge. Doncic scored 18 of his 42 points in the opening quarter alone, hitting three point jumpers from 23 and 25 feet while also knocking down a pair of free throws late in the frame. Los Angeles closed the first quarter up 37-30 and did not let the lead shrink from there.
Walker Kessler supplied interior scoring during that stretch, hitting back-to-back running dunks assisted by Doncic to push the margin to six points with 5:19 left in the first. Austin Reaves added a three-point jumper and layup in the second quarter, part of a 27-point night that paired with Doncic’s production to give the Lakers two scorers above 25 points.
Miami’s offense stalled in transition. The Heat managed just 20 fast break points compared to Los Angeles’ six, and the Lakers outscored Miami 60-38 in points in the paint, a gap that reflected the Lakers’ interior size advantage with Kessler controlling the glass.
Player Of The Game: Luka Doncic
Doncic finished with 42 points on 14-of-24 shooting, including 6-of-15 from three-point range, to go with 13 assists and seven rebounds in 36 minutes. He posted a plus-26 rating, the best mark of any player on either roster, and set up teammates throughout the night while also carrying the scoring load early.
Lakers Vs Heat By The Numbers
Los Angeles shot 57% from the field compared to Miami’s 51%, and the Lakers connected on 44% of their three-point attempts against the Heat’s 39%. The Lakers also held a 41-34 rebounding edge, including a 10-7 advantage on the offensive glass that helped generate extra scoring chances. Miami committed 19 turnovers to Los Angeles’ 16, and the Lakers scored 20 points off those giveaways. The Heat’s lone bright spot statistically came at the free-throw line, where they made 25 of 35 attempts compared to the Lakers’ 17-of-24 mark, but it was not enough to offset the shooting and rebounding gaps.
What It Means
The result pushed the Lakers to 6-2 and into first place in the Pacific Standings, two games ahead of Phoenix and 4.5 clear of the Clippers and Sacramento. Los Angeles has won two straight. Miami dropped to 2-5 and sits in fourth place in the Southeast Standings, 2 games behind division-leading Washington, with its skid now at one straight loss. The season series between the two teams now favors Los Angeles 1-0.
What’s Next
The Lakers and Heat each turn to their next games on the schedule following Monday’s result at crypto.com Arena. Los Angeles will look to build on its current two-game winning streak, while Miami will try to snap its slide as it works to climb out of the bottom of the Southeast Standings.
