Kristaps Porziņģis will remain out indefinitely with what the Golden State Warriors are calling a health-related matter, the team said in a statement released Wednesday. The announcement came one day after the center returned to the Warriors’ facility for the first time since the start of training camp.
Porziņģis, 31, signed a two-year, $40 million deal with Golden State in the offseason after the Warriors acquired him from the Atlanta Hawks midway through last season. He has not practiced or played in a preseason game this fall, missing all of training camp and the team’s first five preseason games because of the same issue.
What The Warriors Said
The Warriors did not specify the nature of the illness in their Wednesday statement, and they stopped short of offering any date for his potential return. “Porzingis will remain out indefinitely due to the same health-related matter but will be around the team,” the team said. “An update on his status, including the potential resumption of practice, playing status, or timeline, will be provided when available and appropriate.”
Porziņģis met with general manager Mike Dunleavy and Dr. Rick Celebrini, the team’s vice president of player health and performance, after arriving at the facility Tuesday. The contents of that meeting have not been made public and the Warriors have given no indication of when that will change.
Porziņģis addressed the situation himself in a social media post, writing, “Hello people, I’m working with doctors and experts to figure out how to be fully back to good health asap. Honestly, I’m getting better and better. I just have to stay patient, and I believe I’ll be feeling great again soon.
It has definitely been frustrating dealing with some health stuff that you can’t exactly pinpoint, on top of injuries throughout my career, so it has added up for sure, but we will get through it. Health is wealth. Thank you for all the support.”
He also used the post to push back on online speculation about his condition, writing, “I appreciate all the Internet doctors trying to diagnose and help, but I’m in the best hands. So everyone can relax now, and I don’t have HIV or AIDS.”
Who Fills In During His Absence
The Warriors have not announced how they intend to adjust their rotation with Porziņģis sidelined, and no corresponding roster move has been confirmed. His absence leaves his availability for the season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers in question, with the Warriors offering no official word on whether he will be ready for that game.
Season And Career Context
Porziņģis has a long history of health setbacks dating back to knee injuries early in his career. During his stint with the Boston Celtics, he was diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, a condition that can trigger rapid heart rate changes, exhaustion and dizziness. Various setbacks caused Porziņģis to miss 50 games combined with the Hawks and Warriors last season.
When healthy enough to play for Golden State last season, the No. 4 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft appeared in 15 games and averaged 16.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists. Those numbers reflect the kind of production the Warriors hoped to build around when they committed $40 million over two years to keep him in the fold.
What Comes Next
No timeline exists for Porziņģis to resume practicing or playing, according to the Warriors’ own statement. The team has said only that further updates will come “when available and appropriate,” leaving his status for the opener against the Lakers unresolved for now.
Golden State’s roster situation remains fluid elsewhere as well, with developments like Yaxel Lendeborg’s development and Stephen Curry’s health, covered in Total Apex Sports’ piece on Curry’s importance to the 2026-27 season, also shaping how the Warriors approach opening night. More details on Porziņģis’ condition are expected once the team determines there is information appropriate to share, according to CBS Sports and Sporting News.
