The Seattle Kraken beat the Washington Capitals 5-3 on Sunday at Capital One Arena, getting two third-period goals from their fourth line to pull away in a game that was tied three times. Jared McCann scored the go-ahead goal with 5:27 left in regulation, and Ryan Winterton added his first goal of the season on a breakaway with under three minutes to play.
Freddy Gaudreau broke a 2-2 tie about 13 minutes into the second period off strong forechecking from Ben Meyers and Winterton, only for Washington’s Boone Jenner to answer 46 seconds into the third. McCann’s goal off a Brandon Montour feed in the slot put Seattle back in front for good, and Winterton closed it out. The Capitals got goals from Jordan Kyrou in his first game with the team and from Alex Ovechkin, who scored his 930th career goal, but Washington’s offseason additions could not slow Seattle’s road trip.
Takeaways From Kraken’s Win Over Capitals
Seattle’s fourth line carried the offense again
Gaudreau, Meyers and Winterton combined for the tiebreaking goal and the clinching goal in the third period. Gaudreau leads the Kraken with four goals this season after scoring seven all of last year, and the trio had already shown chemistry two nights earlier in Detroit, where Gaudreau scored twice, Meyers picked up three points and Winterton recorded two assists.
Washington’s new faces made an impact but couldn’t finish it
Jenner, an offseason pickup, tied the game in the third period by jamming home his own rebound. Kyrou, playing his first game for Washington, tied an earlier frame on a three-way passing sequence that left the puck undefended. Ovechkin reached his 930th career goal after Ilya Protas stole a Ryker Evans clearance and set him up, but the Capitals could not hold a lead in any of the three periods.
Seattle weathered an early storm and tightened up
Washington managed only two shots on Joey Daccord in the opening half of the first period before the game opened up. Daccord made a key save on Jenner at the edge of the crease with just under nine minutes left in regulation to keep the score tied before McCann’s go-ahead goal.
Player Of The Game: Freddy Gaudreau
Gaudreau scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and assisted on Winterton’s clinching goal, finishing with a goal and an assist for two points. It marked his fourth goal of the season, already matching more than half his total from a season ago.
Kraken Vs Capitals By The Numbers
Seattle improved to 4-2-0 with the win, while Washington fell to 3-2-0. Kaapo Kakko opened the scoring early in the first period off a long rebound following a Vince Dunn point shot, and Jordan Eberle tied it late in the period to send the teams into the first intermission at 2-2. The victory was just the second for the Kraken in six all-time games at Capital One Arena.
What’s Next
The Kraken continue their five-city road trip Tuesday night in Philadelphia. The Capitals stay home after dropping their second straight game. Seattle leads the season series with Washington 1-0.
