Key Takeaways From Kansas City Chiefs Defense After Week 9 Win

The Kansas City Chiefs

Not the cleanest performance from the Kansas City Chiefs, but that has been the norm for their team this season. Despite the injuries coming into the game, and injuries during the game, the reigning defending champs pulled out yet another win and moved to 8-0 on the season. The 30-24 overtime victory by Kansas City against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers keeps them ahead of the rest of the NFL in the standings but also inches them ever closer to locking up the No.1 seed in the AFC.

While the Kansas City Chiefs defense wasn’t dominant, the offense made game-changing plays when it mattered most. Then the defense, while not at its best, contributed key stops to support their offense in securing another victory. The Kansas City Chiefs defense also had their second straight multi-sack showing, but improvements are needed as the season progresses.

Kansas City Chiefs Safeties Stand Out

In this matchup, the Kansas City Chiefs safeties proved to be the strongest unit on defense. Rookie Jaden Hicks recorded the highest PFF grade for the team at 78.3, continuing to show promise with each game, as he continues to adapt to the NFL.

Chamarri Conner also had a solid game in terms of coverage. He had the team’s highest coverage grade of 77.3, demonstrating his ability to stay close to receivers and disrupt deep passing opportunities. Conner’s ability to read Baker Mayfield and anticipate routes made him a valuable asset in crucial moments in Monday’s game. Additionally, Justin Reid nearly snagged an interception in the first quarter, but his performance throughout the night was primarily in the Chiefs’ run defense which has been a top-five unit all season. This earned Reid the highest run defense grade at 76.7 this week.

Then to round out the safeties performances is Bryan Cook who continues to solidify his role in this defense. He achieved the highest tackling grade on the team at 81.8. His physical play and ability to deliver timely hits kept the Buccaneers’ runners and pass catchers in check throughout the game. Collectively, the safeties executed timely plays, showcasing their ability to be in the right spots when needed. This performance shows that the safety position, which some might consider to be a weakness of the Kansas City Chiefs defense, is one of the deepest and most well-rounded units on their team.

Chiefs Defensive Force George Karlaftis

Defensive End George Karlaftis continued to impress with his relentless play, marking Monday night’s game as his third straight contest with a sack. Karlaftis now leads the defense with four sacks, and his ability to impact the game not only with his pass rushing but also constant disruption in the backfield was felt throughout the night.

Although Karlaftis did have one of his sacks negated by a defensive holding penalty, that did not discourage him as he pushed on throughout the night creating pressure and disrupting plays. Karlaftis’ second sack came at a crucial moment of the game, and it led to the Buccaneers being put into a third-and-10 situation they could not overcome. His contributions were pivotal in controlling the pace of the game and preventing the Buccaneers from establishing momentum late.

His development over the season has been nothing short of remarkable. In only his second year with the Kansas City Chiefs, he has already become a cornerstone player on the defense. With each game, he continues to prove that he is the perfect player to play alongside Chris Jones on the defensive line. As the pass rush builds momentum this season, Karlaftis’ contributions will be essential for the Kansas City Chiefs as they make their playoff push. His consistent performance gives the Kansas City Chiefs confidence moving forward.

Chiefs Linebacking Challenges

This was not the best night for the Kansas City Chiefs linebacker room. In particular, Drue Tranquill had himself an inconsistent night, particularly compared to his resurgence last week. Although he led the defense with seven tackles, a half sack, and a pass breakup, his performance did not reflect the same intensity. Tranquill’s effort was evident, but he struggled with maintaining coverage and sometimes appeared out of position on key plays. This inconsistency has shown itself in the first few weeks of the season and appears to be back.

Then there is Nick Bolton who also struggled significantly. He lost track of his assignments and failed to make impactful plays when needed. A notable lapse from Bolton occurred during Buccaneers wideout Trey Palmer’s 19-yard reception late in the fourth quarter. Before this game, Bolton had strung together multiple weeks of strong play, but last night his inability to effectively communicate with his teammates further complicated defensive alignments, making it difficult to establish cohesion.

A bright spot for this unit was that Tranquill managed to earn the highest pass rush grade from PFF at 78.9, which illustrates he can be a disruptive force when needed. However, his and Bolton’s struggles in coverage and run defense are a slight concern about the unit’s overall effectiveness. However, this unit has been exceptional this season, so despite a lackluster performance on Monday night, it is unlikely indicative of what is to come. It is certainly something to pay attention to moving forward.

Final Thoughts

The Kansas City Chiefs defense showed glimpses of its dominant form but will need to improve to maintain its winning streak. While the safeties and Karlaftis stood out, the linebacker play leaves room for concern. As injuries continue to challenge this team, the offense is starting to figure itself out. The defense will have to remain the team’s eraser when mistakes do come up and be able to find answers to ensure sustained success.

Heading into the later part of the season Kansas City will continue building, but will also have to address their defensive inconsistencies. With a divisional matchup ahead, regrouping as a team, and preparing for another slugfest are the priority. With standout performances from certain areas of their defense, the Kansas City Chiefs will need every unit firing on all cylinders as they aim to repeat their success from Monday night again this Sunday.
