Alabama tight end Josh Ford has a broken arm and had surgery Sunday, but he is attempting to play Saturday against No. 2 Georgia, coach Kalen DeBoer said Wednesday. DeBoer disclosed the injury during the SEC teleconference, saying Ford has been “progressing along fairly well” since breaking the arm in Saturday’s win over Mississippi State.
The injury threatens to sideline one of Alabama’s key blockers for its biggest game of the season, a matchup with the Bulldogs that carries major stakes for both programs.
What The Team Said
DeBoer did not rule Ford out, but he also did not commit to clearing him either. “He’s determined to get on the football field. Actually progressing along fairly well right now,” DeBoer said.
“We’ll kind of see how the week continues for him. I know where his mindset is at. We just got to make sure he meets the levels we need him to meet as far as being physically ready.
He’s doing a great job. It’s going well. We’re optimistic.”
Alabama’s first official SEC availability report for the Georgia game comes out Wednesday night, according to Sports Illustrated, with additional reports Thursday and Friday and a final list 1.5 hours before kickoff Saturday. Those reports will determine Ford’s official designation as the week progresses.
Who Replaces Him At Tight End
If Ford cannot go, Alabama has options in its tight end rotation. Jay Lindsey profiles as the top run-blocking replacement, while Marshall Pritchett offers more as a receiving threat, per ESPN. Sports Illustrated also lists Kaleb Edwards and Danny Lewis Jr. as players who have already logged significant snaps this season.
DeBoer said other tight ends “have stepped up throughout the year and are eager for their opportunity.”
Season Context
Ford transferred to Alabama from Oklahoma State this offseason as the program’s first transfer commitment. His receiving impact this season includes a one-handed touchdown catch against South Carolina. His value has come mostly as a blocker. Alabama rushed for 101.4 yards per game a season ago and has jumped to 186.4 yards per game through five contests this season, a jump ESPN tied directly to Ford’s presence in the run game.
Alabama is also dealing with other injury questions heading into the Georgia game. Starting right tackle Jayvin James is expected back after missing the Mississippi State game, while outside linebackers Desmond Umeozulu and Justin Hill remain considered unlikely to play, per Sports Illustrated.
What’s Next
Alabama hosts Georgia on Saturday, and Ford’s availability will likely remain unclear until the team’s injury reports roll out Thursday, Friday and the final pregame list 1.5 hours before kickoff.
