Rookie running back Jeremiyah Love heads to injured reserve with a high ankle sprain and is expected to miss four to five weeks, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The No. 3 overall pick suffered the injury in the first half of Sunday’s overtime win over Dallas and did not return.
On the sideline, Love slammed his helmet to the ground before trainers examined him. He went into the blue injury tent and later walked to the locker room, according to coach Mike LaFleur.
What The Team Said About The Jeremiyah Love Injured Reserve Timeline
Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur told reporters the injury is not a continuation of Love’s earlier ankle problems. “It’s a new portion of the ankle,” LaFleur said, according to ESPN.
The distinction matters: Love has already dealt with separate ankle sprains in the preseason and early in the regular season, each affecting a different ankle. The high ankle sprain will sideline him for Weeks 9 through 12, with Week 13 as a possible return window, per Rapoport.
Who Replaces Love In Arizona’s Backfield
Love’s absence comes at a difficult time for Arizona’s running back room. Bam Knight entered the concussion protocol after taking a shoulder to the helmet from a Cowboys defender in the third quarter of Sunday’s game and was ruled out, according to CBS Sports.
With Love headed to injured reserve and Knight in the concussion protocol, Tyler Allgeier becomes the top healthy option in Arizona’s backfield. Allgeier produced a strong performance during the overtime win over Dallas while Love was sidelined, according to Yahoo Sports.
Love’s Rookie Season Context
The No. 3 overall pick’s rookie season has been interrupted repeatedly by ankle issues. He was sidelined for multiple games earlier this season with ankle sprains, limiting his continuity in Arizona’s offense.
What’s Next For Arizona
Love will be eligible to return in Week 13. Allgeier will carry the heaviest workload in the backfield while the Cardinals await Knight’s clearance from the concussion protocol.
