Orioles hire Jared Banner as general manager under Elias

The Baltimore Orioles hired Jared Banner as general manager to work under Mike Elias as Baltimore tries to rebound after their rebuild stalled.

The Baltimore Orioles hired Jared Banner as general manager on Monday, placing him under president of baseball operations Mike Elias as the club seeks to reverse a decline after a promising rebuild stalled. Banner arrives after serving as assistant general manager for the Chicago Cubs since January 2024, according to MLB.com.

The Role

Banner will lead the Orioles’ player development, coaching and performance departments and partner with Elias on strategy, staffing and talent acquisition, according to MLB.com. Banner was also a candidate for the Athletics’ head of baseball operations job before joining Baltimore, according to CBS Sports.

Why The Hire Matters

Mike Elias, the Orioles’ president of baseball operations, said Banner brings experience across multiple departments. “Jared has been one of the rising talents in our league for some time now. He has demonstrated success running multiple different departments and has worked alongside some of the best people and front office talent in the league across multiple stops. He is a perfect fit to grow, evolve and improve the Orioles’ baseball operations, and I look forward to working with him very closely as we build for 2027 and beyond.”

Banner described the move as a response to Elias’s broader plan for the franchise. “When I first heard Mike’s vision, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of,” Banner said. “The Orioles are a storied franchise with a passionate fanbase, a historic ballpark, and an organization full of talent.

I look forward to building upon the foundation laid by Mike and his team to construct a world-class organization and bring Championships back to Baltimore. I am extremely grateful to Mike, David, and Mike for the opportunity, and I am excited to get to work.”

Banner’s Front-Office Background

Banner just completed his 18th year in baseball operations. He spent 11 years with the Boston Red Sox, starting as a fellow in the baseball operations department in 2007 and rising through roles including assistant in player development, assistant in amateur scouting, coordinator of amateur scouting, assistant director of player personnel and vice president of player personnel from 2017-18, where he oversaw international scouting in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Mexico. He was part of Red Sox front offices that won World Series titles in 2007, 2013 and 2018.

He later served as the New York Mets’ executive director of player development from December 2018 to 2020, overseeing the organization’s minor league system. Banner then joined the Cubs in December 2020 as vice president of special projects, moved into vice president of player development from 2022-23, and was promoted to assistant general manager in January 2024. While with Chicago, he identified Pete Crow-Armstrong as a prospective trade target, according to Bleacher Report.

Banner is a native of Brooklyn, New York. He played four years of varsity baseball as an outfielder at Amherst College and served as team captain in 2007.

What It Means

The hire comes as the Orioles try to regain footing after their rebuild stalled. Baltimore endured 100-loss seasons in 2018, 2019 and 2021 before producing a 101-win, AL East title season in 2023. That success did not carry into the postseason: the Orioles went 0-5 across the 2023 and 2024 playoffs.

A slow 2025 start cost manager Brandon Hyde his job. Baltimore finished under .500 in last place in the AL East that season, then went 79-82 in 2026 and finished fourth in the division.

Much of the young core that fueled 2023 has thinned. Adley Rutschman was traded to the Boston Red Sox, and pitcher Corbin Burnes left as a free agent in 2025. Gunnar Henderson and Jackson Holliday remain.

What’s Next

The Orioles will introduce Banner at a press conference at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
