The Phoenix Suns hired Jordan Ott on Wednesday as their new head coach, and they are trying to have a unproven guy to get them to win games. The positive is that Ott is a talented assistant coach with the potential to be a great head coach. Still, this Suns’ job has a lot of expectations, especially with the arrival of Owner Matt Ishiba a couple of seasons ago. So it will be interesting to see how the expectations will be set for this upcoming season for this new head coach.
Ott’s Resume
Ott has been an assistant with the following franchises before being hired by the Suns: the Atlanta Hawks from 2013-16, the Brooklyn Nets from 16-22, and the Los Angeles Lakers from 22-24 before joining Kenny Atkinson’s Staff this past season in Cleveland. He was part of a staff that helped coach one of the best teams in the league this past season, but the playoff collapse in the Indiana Pacers series is something to keep an eye on with Ott, to see how his mentality is going to be for this job starting next season and hopefully beyond.
Final Thoughts
The Suns are making a risky move by hiring a young guy in Ott, because it might not mesh with Devin Booker’s timeline, it definitely doesn’t mesh with Kevin Durant’s timeline, for sure, as Durant is looking for his way out once again. So with these two stars on the team, they decided to go with a first-time, unproven head coach.
This will be an interesting situation to keep an eye on throughout the 2025-26 season to see how long the leash is going to be in the long run, because of the impatience that Ishbia has exhibited in the past. I also think that the Suns might be one of those disappointing situations that players don’t want to play in, especially in a Loaded Western Conference.
