The Houston Texans re-signed Linebacker Derek Barnett to a one-year deal on Monday afternoon. He had a solid 2024 season with the Texans. He had 26 total tackles and 5 sacks. Barnett has been a solid player in the league since he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles 14th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. Will this end up being a good contract for both sides?
Houston Texans Offseason Summary
Barnett returns to a Texans defense that was strong in 2024. They were fifth in total yards allowed per game. According to PFF, he was 28th amongst edge rushers against the run. Houston’s defense was one of the league’s best last season at getting to the quarterback. They were fourth in sacks.
Houston must also improve its wide receiver room this offseason. They accomplished that by trading for Wide Receiver Christian Kirk a few days ago. The Texans must add another receiver for Quarterback CJ Stroud due to Wide Receiver Tank Dell’s 2025 season is in doubt.
Final Thoughts
Barnett returning to the Houston Texans is a shrewd move by the organization. Houston is looking to take the next step following AFC Divisional Round losses in back-to-back seasons. He will provide stability to a defense that showed promise last season.
