Houston Rockets

The Houston Rockets are coming off a tough loss in their last game against the Brooklyn Nets, 99-97. They had a 4-point lead with 8.1 seconds left and found a way to lose this game. Houston sits with a record of 32-18 and is the 3rd seed in the Western Conference currently. Alperen Sengun had a good game in the loss with  24 points, 15 in the 4th quarter, 20 rebounds, and 4 assists. Amen Thompson filled the stat sheet with 7 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks. They have been one of the surprising teams in the NBA this season.

Defensively, they are excellent. Houston currently ranks 6th in points allowed per game, 5th in opponent FG %, 11th in opponent 3-point FG %, 11th in blocks per game, 8th in steals per game, and 1st in rebounds per game. In terms of injuries, Fred VanVleet is listed as out for this game as he is considered week to week. Steven Adams is listed as doubtful for this game as well, with an ankle injury. If Adams is out, that hurts this team’s size as they are going against one of the more dominant interior teams in the NBA in Minnesota.

Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves are coming off a dominating win against the Chicago Bulls in their last game, 127-108. That win snapped their two-game losing streak. Minnesota sits with a record of 28-23 on the season and is 7th in the Western Conference. Anthony Edwards was dominant in the win, scoring 49 points and adding 9 rebounds in the game. Naz Reid was great as well. Reid finished the game with 22 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and three stocks. When this team plays to their potential, they are a tough out on a nightly basis.

Defensively, Minnesota is an above-average team. They are not as good as they were last season, but they are still good. They rank 4th in points allowed per game, 7th in opponent FG %, 5th in opponent 3-point FG %, 16th in blocks per game, 16th in steals per game, and 20th in rebounds per game. Regarding injuries, Julius Randle is still sidelined with a groin injury that will keep him out through the all-star break. Donte DiVincenzo is still out with a toe injury as well. With both players expected to be back sooner than later, they need to keep pace with the other teams in the West.

Prediction

The Minnesota Timberwolves are going to win this game over the Houston Rockets. I am riding the hot hand of Anthony Edwards and Naz Reid in this game. With Steven Adams being listed as out as well, that hurts for a team that can run a two-center lineup with Rudy Gobert and Reid. Minnesota is 6-4 in their last 10 games with a 13-12 record at home. While the Houston Rockets have a record of 5-5 in their last 10 games and have a record of 17-10 on the road. No FVV and no Adams will show their heads in this game as the Timberwolves “upset” the Rockets.

Final Pick

Minnesota Timberwolves ML (+108)
