How Bad Has Philadelphia’s Slide Gotten?
The Flyers have not won in regulation, overtime or a shootout across their first eight games, going 0-5-3 overall. Their most glaring problem is scoring differential, sitting at minus-20 through the stretch, a product of allowing 30 goals while scoring only 10. Philadelphia is also 0-3-1 on the road, a troubling split heading into a trip to Detroit. The Flyers’ skid was detailed in a previous report on the losing streak and continued with a loss to the Seattle Kraken in a shootout on Oct. 13.
Is Detroit’s Recent Form Any Better?
The Red Wings have won just once in their last five games, a 5-3 result over the Ottawa Senators on Oct. 6, and dropped their most recent outing 5-4 in overtime to the New Jersey Devils on Oct. 13, a game recapped by Total Apex Sports. Detroit is 1-3-1 at home this season. The Red Wings have scored 14 goals and allowed 19, a modest differential compared to Philadelphia’s but still a losing formula through six games.
Who Is Out With Injuries?
Detroit is without four forwards and defensemen on injured reserve: Mason Appleton (undisclosed), J.T. Compher (undisclosed), Marco Kasper (upper body) and Simon Edvinsson, who is on injured reserve for a contract dispute. Philadelphia is similarly shorthanded.
Travis Konecny (lower body) and Nikita Grebenkin (back) are on injured reserve, Rasmus Ristolainen (upper body) is also on IR, and Cam York (upper body) is listed as day to day. Daniil Tarasov is the Red Wings’ probable starting goaltender, while Dan Vladar is projected to start for Philadelphia, though both designations remain projections until puck drop.
Where Does The Scoring Have To Come From?
Detroit forward Alex DeBrincat leads all skaters in this matchup with four goals, four assists and eight points, giving the Red Wings their most reliable scoring threat with several regulars sidelined. Philadelphia’s offense has been spread thin by comparison, with Christian Dvorak pacing the team at three points on two goals and Trevor Zegras leading with two assists. With Konecny and Grebenkin both out for the Flyers, the burden on Dvorak, Zegras and the rest of Philadelphia’s healthy forwards grows heavier against a Detroit defense that has already been without Edvinsson.
What To Watch
Both teams sit near the bottom of their divisions, with Philadelphia last in the Metropolitan at three points and Detroit last in the Atlantic at four points. A win Thursday would give either club its first sustained momentum of the season. For Philadelphia, snapping an eight-game skid on the road against a Detroit team also missing key pieces up front and on the blue line represents a clear opportunity, while the Red Wings will look to avoid consecutive losses after squandering a lead against New Jersey. Philadelphia’s special teams have struggled all season, converting only two power-play goals compared to Detroit’s four, a gap that could matter if either team draws extra chances Thursday.
