Devils Outlook

New Jersey sits fourth in the Metropolitan Division with four points through four games. Nico Hischier leads the team with two goals, and Hischier recently scored his 200th career goal in a Devils win. Jesper Bratt paces New Jersey in both assists and points with three and four, respectively.

The Devils own a better save percentage edge over Detroit despite a higher goals-against average of 3.50 compared to Detroit’s 2.80, a split tied to New Jersey facing fewer total shots against (109) than Detroit (127). Jake Allen is projected to start in goal for New Jersey. New Jersey opened its season chasing a 2-0 start and has split results since, including an OT win over the Philadelphia Flyers and a loss to the Utah Mammoth.

Red Wings Outlook

Detroit has been outscored in three of its last five games despite posting a slightly higher team shooting percentage than New Jersey at 6.1%. The Red Wings fell 1-0 in a shootout to the Canadiens on Oct. 11, with Zachary Bolduc scoring the deciding goal in the sixth round, according to Sports Illustrated. Daniil Tarasov made 30 saves in that game, his first start for Detroit after signing a one-year free-agent deal following a 13-15-3 record and .895 save percentage with the Florida Panthers last season, per Sports Illustrated.

John Gibson is projected to start in net for Detroit on Tuesday. The Red Wings also lost 6-3 to the Seattle Kraken on Oct. 10, a game in which Frederick Gaudreau scored twice during a four-goal second period, according to the Houston Chronicle. Viktor Arvidsson leads Detroit with three goals and has scored a power-play goal in each of the team’s last three games, the Houston Chronicle reported. Alex DeBrincat tallied his 600th career point in his 700th NHL game during the loss to Montreal and leads Detroit with five points this season.

Detroit coach Todd McLellan said the team has dealt with distractions tied to the ongoing Dylan Larkin situation but that players have stayed focused on preparation, according to Sports Illustrated.

Key Matchup

Detroit’s power play has produced four goals on the season, the same total as New Jersey, but Arvidsson’s recent run of power-play scoring gives the Red Wings a unit that has found rhythm with the man advantage. New Jersey’s penalty kill will need to account for that trend given Detroit’s power-play goals in three straight games. On the other end, New Jersey’s shooting percentage edge of 6.6% to 6.1% suggests the Devils have been slightly more efficient finishing their chances, a factor that could matter against a Red Wings defense that has allowed 127 shots against through five games.

What To Watch

Lucas Raymond, who has scored 156 points over his past 164 games, was singled out by teammate Alex DeBrincat in the NHL’s Frozen Frenzy player poll. DeBrincat said of Raymond, “We’ve already seen what he can do, but I think he’s going to explode even more than he has. I’m expecting him to have a big year. Yeah, I think that’s my guy,” according to NHL.com.

Detroit remains at the bottom of the Atlantic Division with three points, making every game early in the season significant for a team trying to climb out of last place. The Devils, meanwhile, look to build on their Oct. 10 win over Vancouver and move up in a tightly packed Metropolitan Division where just a few points separate several teams, as shown by New Jersey’s recent matchup against Utah.
