Florida State Coaching Search: Weighing Schumann, Fisher

The Florida State coaching search is underway after Mike Norvell's firing, with Glenn Schumann, Jimbo Fisher and Manny Diaz as names to watch.

The Florida State coaching search candidates emerging just hours after Mike Norvell’s firing tell a story about what the Seminoles need most: someone who can recruit at a championship level and stop the bleeding against rival programs. Florida State fired Norvell on Sunday, roughly 12 hours after a home loss to Clemson, ending a six-plus season tenure that produced a 41-39 overall record. School president Richard McCullough announced the move, and assistant coach Rick Stockstill was named interim head coach while the search plays out.

Three names have surfaced early: Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann, former Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher and Duke head coach Manny Diaz. Each brings a different value proposition, and each comes with real questions.

Why Florida State Moved Now

The timing reflects how far the program had fallen since its near-miss with the College Football Playoff. Florida State went undefeated in the regular season and won the ACC title in 2023, then learned on Dec. 3, 2023, that the committee left the Seminoles out of the playoff field anyway. That snub marked what ESPN described as the turning point of Norvell’s tenure.

What followed was a collapse: a 2-10 season in 2024 with just one ACC win, then a 3-5 start in 2025 before the firing, with only two conference victories. Florida State and Norvell went 10-22 since the start of the 2024 season, and he lost 17 of his final 21 ACC games. The Seminoles have not beaten Miami, Florida or Clemson, their three primary rivals, since 2023.

Athletic director Michael Alford was fired in mid-September, leaving the program without its top administrator for weeks before Norvell’s exit. In a statement, the school said, “We have made the decision to change the leadership of our football program. We thank Mike Norvell for his commitment and service to Florida State and wish him and his family the very best.

We understand the deep passion of Seminole fans and share their high expectations for this program.” Florida State absorbs a buyout of roughly $47 million, 85% of Norvell’s remaining salary through 2031, though offset language in his contract would reduce that figure if he takes another coaching job. Norvell was set to earn $10.3 million in 2026.

Glenn Schumann Brings Pedigree And Recruiting Ties

Schumann, 36, has spent his career inside two of the sport’s most successful defensive systems. He was a student and graduate assistant under Nick Saban at Alabama during a stretch that produced four national titles, then became co-defensive coordinator at Georgia under Kirby Smart, helping the Bulldogs win back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022. Schumann was born in Valdosta, Georgia, close to Tallahassee, and knows the regional recruiting terrain.

An industry source told ESPN before this season that Florida State would make sense for Schumann. His age and lack of head-coaching experience are real unknowns, but his defensive track record and regional roots fit what Florida State needs most: credibility on the trail.

Jimbo Fisher Offers A Known Commodity

Fisher, 60, already built a championship program at Florida State once. Between 2012 and 2016, he led the Seminoles to five straight 10-win seasons, four AP top-10 finishes, three ACC titles and a national championship. According to ESPN, Fisher thrived in recruiting in ways Norvell never did, and because he does not need the money, Florida State could likely sign him to a school-friendly contract.

The counterpoint is that Fisher’s departure in 2018 preceded a stretch Florida State has yet to climb out of. The program has gone 44-49 since 2015 under Fisher, Willie Taggart and Norvell combined, a reminder that even Fisher’s run ended with the roster trending the wrong direction.

Manny Diaz Has The Florida State Pedigree

Diaz, a 1995 Florida State graduate and Miami native, has built the most impressive resume of the three candidates in real time. He is 6-2 at Duke this season after going 18-9 in his first two years there, and he led the Blue Devils to the 2025 ACC title with an overtime win over Virginia in the championship game. Duke signed Diaz to an extension through 2031 in April, which would make any move costly for Florida State to pull off.

Diaz previously went 21-15 as head coach at Miami from 2019 to 2021 and spent two seasons as Penn State’s defensive coordinator. His familiarity with Florida State and the ACC gives him an edge in program fit, even if prying him away from a fresh extension is no simple matter.

The Strongest Counterpoint: None Of This Fixes The Roster Fast

Whoever Florida State hires inherits more than a search committee’s preference. Norvell’s handpicked quarterbacks, DJ Uiagalelei, Tommy Castellanos and Ashton Daniels, all struggled with accuracy, and the Seminoles are 1-5 against Power Four opponents in 2026, including a 36-24 loss to Clemson as 5-point favorites. Florida State has won just five Power Four games over the last two and a half seasons.

A splashy hire does not immediately solve a depth chart that has underperformed for three straight years, and recruiting stability takes time to show up on the field. Fisher’s own history at Florida State, strong at the top and shaky by the end, is proof that name recognition alone does not guarantee sustained success.

What To Watch Next

Stockstill leads the program on an interim basis while Florida State conducts its search, with no official timeline yet reported for a permanent hire. The urgency is clear given the buyout the school just absorbed and the three straight losing or near-losing seasons on the resume. Whether Florida State leans toward Schumann’s recruiting-driven upside, Fisher’s proven championship formula or Diaz’s in-conference track record, the program’s immediate priority will be reassuring current commits and locking down a roster still searching for consistency at quarterback.
