Florida playoff resume ranking lands at No. 2 after huge win
Florida landed at No. 2 in CBS Sports’ college football playoff resume ranking released Oct. 1, behind only Texas, after the Gators’ 52-28 win over Ole Miss on Sept. 26 in Gainesville. The Florida playoff resume ranking gives the Gators a score of 1.17, according to CBS Sports.
How the Florida playoff resume ranking works
CBS Sports gives every game a value between -1 and 1, based on how likely an average No. 25 team would be to get the same result. A road win over the No. 1 team adds 0.98, while a home loss to an FCS opponent subtracts 0.99. This is a CBS Sports metric, not the College Football Playoff selection committee’s ranking.
Texas leads at 1.81, and its road win at No. 17 Tennessee in Week 4 added 0.67. Florida is next at 1.17, helped by a +0.71 for beating Ole Miss. Mississippi State (1.07), Alabama (0.95) and Ole Miss (0.93) round out a top five made up entirely of SEC teams. CBS Sports pointed to the league’s new nine-game conference schedule.
Why Florida’s resume ranking beats some unbeaten teams
Georgia is 4-0 but has not played a team in CBS Sports’ top 45, so it does not appear in that top five. Ole Miss, at 3-1, holds a 2-1 record against such opponents.
The polls also moved. Florida climbed 13 spots to No. 8 in the AP Top 25, according to Yahoo Sports. Texas, Georgia, Notre Dame, Miami and Ohio State hold the top five, and Ole Miss fell to No. 9.
The Florida playoff resume ranking reflects a hot start for first-year coach Jon Sumrall. The Gators are 4-0 after beating Florida Atlantic 66-21, Campbell 52-3, Auburn 44-39 on the road and Ole Miss, per the school’s schedule. They have scored 214 points through four games, the most since the 1996 national championship season, CBS Sports reported.
“I think our mindset has changed,” Sumrall said. “I think we’re playing with a different level of resiliency and toughness.”
