Florida Gators outlook
Florida has won its first four games, most recently a 52-28 rout of then-No. 4 Ole Miss that lifted the Gators into the top 10, per ESPN. Quarterback Aaron Philo has completed 63 of 87 passes for 917 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions, while running back Jadan Baugh has been the engine of the offense with 600 yards and 11 touchdowns on 83 carries.
The bigger question is health at receiver. Leading pass-catcher Vernell Brown III hurt his right knee at the end of a second-quarter run against Ole Miss and wore a protective sleeve after halftime. Sumrall said imaging brought good news and called the injury “the lowest-grade strain you could get,” FOX Sports reported. Sumrall added that Brown’s return is “really going to be as much of a pain tolerance and a confidence with him being ready to go.” Brown leads Florida with 17 catches for 271 yards and two touchdowns.
Eric Singleton Jr. returned against Ole Miss after missing two games with a sprained left ankle and had one catch for 38 yards while drawing a 15-yard pass-interference penalty, per FOX Sports. He had been called a “true game-time decision” before that game, according to Yahoo Sports, and his role could grow if Brown is limited.
Missouri Tigers outlook
Missouri’s 3-0 start ended Saturday, Sept. 26, with a 31-24 loss at Mississippi State. Quarterback Austin Simmons went 23 of 39 for 295 yards and three touchdowns, but Mississippi State went ahead with 3:57 left, and Simmons’ Hail Mary on the final play was broken up in the end zone, according to CBS Sports‘ game recap.
Simmons has completed 70 of 107 passes for 947 yards and 11 touchdowns on the season, and receiver Cayden Lee has emerged as his top target with 27 catches for 412 yards and four touchdowns, including two scoring grabs in the loss to the Bulldogs. Running back Jamal Roberts has carried the ground game with 395 yards and three touchdowns on 89 attempts, though Missouri’s offense has leaned heavily on Simmons’ arm through four weeks.
Key Florida vs. Missouri matchup: Gators receivers vs. Tigers secondary
How much Brown and Singleton can give Florida on the outside will shape this game as much as anything Missouri does schematically. Philo has thrown for 917 yards and seven touchdowns with a clean 63-of-87 completion mark, but that efficiency has come with both of his top perimeter weapons banged up for stretches of the season.
Missouri’s defense allowed Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor to throw for 360 yards and three touchdowns in the loss to Mississippi State, a sign the Tigers’ secondary can be tested through the air. If Brown is limited or held out, Florida may lean more on Baugh, who has 11 rushing touchdowns already, to control the game on the ground instead.
Florida vs. Missouri players to watch
Jadan Baugh, RB, Florida
Baugh has been one of the SEC’s most productive backs, rushing for 600 yards and 11 touchdowns on 83 carries, including a three-touchdown, 162-yard performance in a 44-39 win over Auburn. He enters Columbia healthy and figures to be a focal point regardless of the receiver situation.
Cayden Lee, WR, Missouri
Lee caught 11 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns in the loss at Mississippi State and leads the Tigers with 27 receptions for 412 yards on the season. He’s been Simmons’ most reliable target and will be central to any response from last week’s setback.
Vernell Brown III, WR, Florida
Brown’s status is the biggest variable in Florida vs. Missouri. He leads the team with 17 catches, 271 yards and two touchdowns, and Sumrall has said his return is more about pain tolerance and confidence than any structural concern.
What to watch in Florida vs. Missouri
Florida has won four straight while climbing into the top 10, part of a broader surge Sumrall has led in his first season after Lane Kiffin turned down Florida last year, according to USA Today. A road win over a ranked Missouri team would further validate that rise and move Florida to 3-0 in SEC play.
For Missouri, Florida vs. Missouri is about answering last week’s fourth-quarter collapse and avoiding an 0-2 start in conference play. A loss would put an early dent in Missouri’s playoff hopes, while a win would be their best of the season and restore momentum heading into the back half of October.
