England U21s Euro 2027 qualification is secure after a 0-0 draw against Slovakia on Friday at Bet365 Stadium in Stoke. The point was enough for the Young Lions to reach next summer’s tournament in Albania and Serbia with one qualifier still to play, Sky Sports reported.
How England U21s Euro 2027 qualification was sealed
England entered the match six points clear of Slovakia with two games left, so a draw was enough. Manager Lee Carsley said his team would go for the win, but Slovakia’s defensive approach made the hosts work for every chance.
Middlesbrough striker Will Lankshear, making his first start, headed wide twice. Ethan Nwaneri also threatened, and Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong forced a save from Slovakia goalkeeper Adam Hrdina. Max Alleyne’s flicked effort from a Nwaneri corner hit the post, according to the Football Association.
Slovakia pushed late but England held firm
Slovakia showed more intensity after halftime but could not break down England’s back line. The match stayed goalless despite late chances at both ends.
What it means for Euro 2027
England are chasing a third straight European Championship at this level. Their final group match comes Tuesday against the Republic of Ireland in Cork, which gives Carsley a low-pressure chance to test options before the finals.
Carsley’s name is familiar to England fans from his stint in charge of the senior team, which we covered in our look at his gamble against Greece. The senior job has since moved on, as our report on Thomas Tuchel’s appointment explains, and fans can read more in our piece on England’s next permanent manager.
