There are a few fighters with long careers and sustained victory records, such as Dustin Poirier. Thus, Poirier has remained among the most-ranked fighters in the UFC’s lightweight category for almost a decade. His hunger for the win and his capacity to remain a contender at the top tier has cemented his place as one of the greatest fighters in the history of the UFC.
Dustin Poirier Chasing UFC Gold
Although Dustin Poirier has made a great impact in the UFC octagon, he has not clinched the biggest title—the undisputed UFC lightweight champion. His best performance towards the belt came in 2019 when he won the interim lightweight title, but all his attempts at getting the belt have been an utter loss. The latest loss occurred in June 2024 through Islam Makhachev’s KO at UFC 302. Dustin Poirier’s win over Makhachev was another shocking moment for the lightweight champion contender.
Thus, although Dustin Poirier has numerous problems on his way, there can be another opportunity to become a top-performing player again. Former fighter Benoit Saint-Denis believes that Makhachev is holding the key for his rematch. Saint-Denis, who is scheduled in UFC Paris this Saturday, has expressed his desire for another crack against him and is optimistic about making the call by putting up a great show against Moicano.
A suggestion of a Trilogy between Chandler and Gaethje
Recent actions by Dustin Poirier, particularly on social media platforms, have led to one wondering what he is up to next. Since suggesting that he was thinking of retiring after losing to Makhachev, Dustin Poirier seems to have rediscovered his passion. He offered a trilogy fight with Justin Gaethje, who scored a head kick knockout against Poirier at the UFC 291 event.
It could not be further from the truth, as a third fight between Poirier and Gaethje would not be entirely outlandish. The last fight was a very close call, and a rematch would not only avenge both fighters but also give them a chance to win the final fight of their respective careers. This way after this trilogy a double retirement may be an appropriate farewell since both fighters have intensive and exhausting combat histories. Though, it would make any future timeline of Saint-Denis to get his rematch with Dustin Poirier being pushed to a later date.
How did Saint-Denis become a contender?
Although the possibility of a third fight with Poirier-Gaethje could put a snag in his plan, Saint-Denis is not distracted by the prospect. In the case of victory against Renato Moicano in UFC Paris, Saint-Denis will be able to put himself into further title shot contention, including a second fight against Dustin. As Dustin Poirier’s future position remains open, Saint-Denis will continue towards the top of the lightweight division.
As for the future steps of Dustin Poirier’s career, the spectators eagerly await what the next phase of “The Diamond’s” life will be, regardless of whether it is a trilogy fight with Gaethje again or another shot at the title; this isn’t the end of the road for him yet.
